  • tire pyrometer

question for all you corner turning mofo's, I am looking at getting a tire pyrometer. Is it worth it for one of the big mamma jammas that record all 4 corners, or will a simple single readout be just as effective. My thought's are that a big mamma jamma will be faster because you don't waste time writing down the info, faster = less time for the tire to cool down.

big mamma jamma is a waste of money. You are looking for trends across the tire inside to outside to set camber. Sure, more info is useful, but the price is not. The single longacre unit works just fine but beware about the fragile tip. They get pulled out of the pen VERY easily. Be sure to wiggle, twist or lay over the pen before pulling out of the tread because you can't just buy the probe/wire alone. I think you can, but it is nearly the same price as the unit and wire.

also, check summit or jegs for the pyrometers....they sometimes sell them cheaper than saferacer.com or similar sites.

I am looking for "good" tire pressures and alignment settings without massive amounts of back to back lap times to determine the fastest settings, what do you suggest, I figured a pyrometer would be a step in the right direction.

they are good for tire wear, but that doesn't mean it will be the fastest by any means. the goodyear and firestone guys are constantly sticking our tires, but it's only for safety so they can say "we told you not to", kinda deal. even pressure build up is a good thing to look at, but for instance our paved oval cars will always have the RR tire 20-30 degrees hotter than any other tire.

Tire temps are the only way to go and always the FIRST step. We use the single temp reader all the time. Just stab the tires....and have someone write down the temps. Doesn't matter if they cool off either, as the entire tire cools off at the same rate. I have some pre set up templates that you can get from me to record all the data on paper.

TIRE TEMPS ARE REALLY THE ONLY MEASURABLE WAYS TO KNOW WHAT YOU NEED TO ADJUST.

Wish I had tons of money for testing so I could use one of these to adjust!

pretty neat on the FLIR stuff but it seemed a little slow to pickup temp changes while braking on what I assume are the front tires. Also seemed to lag sometimes at corner entry. Then sometimes it was spot on?

                    Weird...but cool!
