The Vampire Diaries, the CW's fan and social media winner, returns with the premiere of season 4 tonight. The teen-geared drama has been a social media phenomenon, with the show and its characters becoming Twitter trends regularly. As fans gear up for season 4, no one should be surprised when we start seeing "TVD" "Elena and Damon" or "Elena and Stefan" in our Twitter feeds. The program also feeds (vampire joke) right into America's ongoing obsession with vampires: think Twilight, True Blood, and yes, The Vampire Diaries. Season 4 begins on a heavy-duty cliff-hanger. Season 3 ended with a tragic car accident that put Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev) in critical condition. As we begin season 4 she is well underway to becoming a vampire and is in full transition mode; and she's not very happy about it. It seems that most of the first episode will be dealing with everyone's reactions to Elena's new vampire status.
