  • Body work tips

I got backed into about a week and a half ago. I got word today that the other guy's insurance is going to settle the claim in my favor. My original plan was to just replace the bed. He hit me in the passenger side rear corner under the tail light and left a decent sized dent. My neighbor let me borrow his body hammers and dollies. I think I am going to have a go at working the corner out myself. Any tips? I know, people spend years learning to do it right. I figure it is a learning experience and worst case, I go ahead and swap the bed out.

If you take the light out, can you access that corner from behind? It might be difficult to popup it out.

But I am sure a professional has some tricks. My uncle is a paint and body guy. I will ask how to do it.

I haven't pulled the light yet, but it should be accessible from top and bottom

I got word that my check was in the mail so I started on the body work yesterday. After about an hour this is what I had.

I couldn't get behind it originally. Without body picks the best utensil I had was a crowbar...It worked pretty good on the bigger portions of the dent. Once I got it popped out, I worked on it with the shrinking dolly and hammer to work out the points from the bar. There are still some areas that need worked out before I can think about filler. I am going to either order or try and get a body pick local so I can finess it a little better.

It is too bad I don't have a welder, I would go ahead and replace the bumper with a roll pan

It isn't done yet. I still need to clear it and it will probably need buffed. Worked the dent out and then spent a couple of days (4 hrs or so) on the filler work. I wanted to make sure the filler wasn't too thick. Paint was done with duplicolor sprays, as the only compressor I have is for my airbrush. The clear will be duplicolor as well. I would prefer to use a urethane clear however, not having the proper set up, it isn't an option.

What do you think? Their insurance cut me a check for $1500. So far I am OOP about $60

Turned out great, even better with $1400 in the pocket.

Thanks. It still needs a good buff. It is VERY noticeable at times

Shit I'm still waiting on the control arms to do the suspension! I will probably build an 8.8 for the rear first as well, I won't have to buy adapters for the rear then.

I spent WAY too much on AR parts this week, so the truck build has slowed WAY down
