I use a wire wheel with a cordless drill on high and acetone.

That sounds quite time consuming, how many passes before it knocks off the scale? I am hearing good things about these norton wheels too

I only worry about the small section that I am welding to get it that clean. The rest of the part might get a blast of brake cleaner and a Scotch brite pad rub down if it is bad enough. All the tubing I've had to mess with wasn't really that bad and still looks fine under a good coat of spray paint.

What size/type of material (angle, beam, flat, etc) are you working with?

                I prefer green grinding wheels.

You can use muriatic acid, then hit it with a wire cup brush/grinder.

hydrochloric or muriatic acid is in the pickling of steel.
