  • Refinishing machined aluminum wheels

I am refinishing factory aluminum wheels. I stripped off the clear coat, and have Glisten PC, a clear catalyzed urethane by POR-15 .

But I'm not sure how to get the wheels bright prior to the clear coat. I've acid washed them, and used steel wool - that made them somewhat bright for 30minutes. I'm concerned a polish will cause problems paint adhesion.

    Tips?

Why didn't you just have a wheel company repop them for ya man?

Because that's $400,and I can do it myself for $50.

I've done a set before, but I don't remember having trouble getting the aluminum shiny.

Polish them and then hit it with a degreaser/solvent to remove any polish. Then soap/water and shoot it. Quick and easy, I wouldn't worry.

What wheel company do you use?

The answer was simple - Scothbrite! I rubbed the wheels down with grey Scotchbrite & they are gleaming. Just wiped them down with APS-120 metal prep, and will spray on the Glisten PC first thing tomorrow morning.

I've tried all 4 links on photobucket, and direct download - none work. Posted pics 2 weeks ago & had no problems

$50 in materials & I have enough left over to do 4 more. These wheels are going on my Ranger soon. I also painted the grill body color - "Toreadore Red", and shot it with same clear coat.
