North Korea Fires Rockets at Island

SEOUL—North Korea fired artillery rockets at a South Korean island near a disputed western maritime border Tuesday, in a clash that killed two South Korean marines and set numerous buildings on fire.

A South Korean military unit on the island, called Yeonpyeong, returned fire, while military officials scrambled fighter jets. In addition to the deaths, at least 16 more were injured, military officials said. Three civilians were injured, and the island's 1,200 residents were sent scrambling for bomb shelters.

Last nights thread by Jlyon, in which he said "i hate the fact that knowing they (his children) will be learning about all these other countries over ours...."

He then went on to say how kids in other countries "dont have to study about America, so why should we need to learn about them", and how he "doesnt give a fuck" about stuff that occurs outside of the USA.

I feel that this mentality will contribute to our downfall, and is responsible for the rest of the world seeing us as ignorant and self absorbed asses.

Sadly, it's going to end up this way. All we can do is bring ours up with a decent head on their shoulders and hope for the best.

i didn't say "so why should we learn about them". either way, i don't feel the down fall of America will be the way i think. i think the down fall of America was when we started kissing everyone elses ass to make them happy instead of doing what it takes to fix our own problems here.

not to get off subject, we should have leveled NK along time ago, just as we should have done in the middle east.

And no, I do not think you are a dumbass. I do think that at the time you were feeling angry and disheveled and couldn't channel into words exactly how you felt.

And yes, many factors will be responsible for our downfall including the one you just stated. Poor education will also contribute to it (we have no national standard and our system is ranked below Mexico).

The rest of the world sees us as ignorant because they are jealous of what this country stands for and grasp for a reason to make themselves feel justified. And to be honest, I am done caring about what the rest of the world thinks. This is coming from someone who has studied and continues to study every sort of history, especially the history of Europe.

The downfall of this country is not our lack of understanding the history of western civlization but the self loathing bullshit that we feed our children. Not only self loathing about our country but misanthropic bullshit in general.
