Android OS upgrade on Samsung Galaxy Tab?

My question to you guru's is this:

How do I backup what I currently have? This is a GSM and WIFI Sprint version. The previous owner did something to allow me to use it without having a service provider. What do I need to do to backup what I have now, and allow em to upgrade the new gingerbread platform and still be able to use it without a data plan(only on wifi).

You should be able to root and load custom ROMs on tabs, just like phones. I'd suggest going that route.

Nandroid You can backup everything when you root the tablet. But I am pretty sure you have to root the phone first. Rooting does not = installing a custom rom. So Nand would be a god way to save your stock rom.
