  • AT&T to move Unlimited Data Customers who are tethering to a Tiered Plan

AT&T has said that starting as soon as August 11th, it will start moving those customers whom they’ve contacted about tethering without a specific tethering plan on to one. Those customers in question will be moved onto AT&T’s Data Pro plus Tehthering, giving them 4 GB of data to use for $45 a month

I work for AT&T and havent heard of this, but its possible. Ive seen several accounts not be able to renew/upgrade though because they use too much data on their "unlimited" plan!

they all ready called me and tried to move me about a month ago. i was tethering with my unlimited plan. when you are not thethering the data goes through a different sever. that how your phone browser automatically goes to mobile websites by default. when you tether it uses a different server that is like a normal internet server and allows you to access websites that the other wont support. that is how they know when you are tethering without a thether plan.

they told me they were taking me off the unlimited and putting me on a tethering plan and that it was only 5gb and more expensive. i called them and told them if they take my unlimited away i would leave and go to a different company. they transferred me to the cancellation dept and after i told them why i was leaving att they eventually said they would keep me on the unlimited plan as long as i didn't tether anymore.

btw i was using about 20gb a month. lol.

there is a way to still tether though, but i think i am just going to get a clear wireless card for my laptop.

That's wrong. You get redirected to mobile websites because the server knows which OS/browser you're using.

well regardless of how the websites know. att knows because mobile internet is through a different server/network than tether internet and att can see when you switch to the other server/network for internet, thus knowing when you are tethering.

Yes and no. iPhone uses a different access point for their built-in tethering; Android does not (thus making Android tethering harder to track).

makes sense. i have an iphone.

my point is that, they won't really take away your unlimited plan if you threaten to leave, because they know that even with you tethering fraudulently they are still making money off you, which is always better than you giving it to a different company.

they have apps for the iphone to still allow tethering that can go undetected though. the only drawback is that you still go to mobile sites by default and some videos won't work on the device you are tethering to and torrent downloading software won't connect either.

even if I don't tether I can burn up to a gig a day. Between netflix/youtube/pandora and having a 12-14 hour a day desk job...

So what are some ways to get around getting caught tethering on an iPhone? I rarely tether, my typical data usage per month is normally around 250-300 MB but because I have an iPad and a laptop sometimes I need to tether and I don't want to be "caught".

None that I'm aware of since you can't alter the apn on iPhails.

Someone mentioned using PDAnet instead of MyWi. Thoughts?

Still uses the same apn so you'll still be caught.
