  • Trying to network a xp pc with win 7 laptop

    I have a problem that I can't figure out.

I am trying to network a win 7 laptop, and a xp pc. I can access the win 7 laptop from the xp machine, but I can't access the xp machine from the win 7 laptop. When I try to access the XP machine, I get a prompt for username and password. I haven't set up any kind of username or password. I did have a password on the user on the xp machine, but I disabled that when this started. I don't know what to do.

The windows firewall is off, and I do have Norton. I went to msconfig and disabled norton, but that didn't help.

Any help would be great thx.

You're sure the XP administrator doesn't have one? If so I'd just set up a password and see if that works.

I only had one user starting off, and I disabled the password on it.

Set the workgroups. Are they the same?

          Yup, same workgroups.

I can browse the win7 laptop from the xp pc.

I can't browse the xp pc with the win 7 laptop.

Did some searches on the net and below is what i did to solve the problem that was occuring

Permitting Network Access Without a Password
To allow users to log onto their computers without a password and then access the XP Professional machine without a password, you must make a security policy change:

            1. Go to Control Panel | Performance and Maintenance | Administrative Tools | Local Security Policy.
            2. Expand Local Policies | Security Options.
            3. Double-click Accounts: Limit local account use of blank passwords to console login only, which is enabled by default. Disable this option and click OK.

this stopped the network access dialog box appearing when tryin to access my xp machine from windows 7 ! !

Try re-doing the homegroup password and name?

If that doesn't work, burn the XP machine with fire.

                  Disabled firewall on xp machine.

And yes, I went to my computer\sharing\ and enabled the drive to share.

try creating a user on the Win7 machine with a password, then on the XP machine create the same username and password, and make sure it has rights to the share and files on the Windows

Then login to the Win7 machine with that user, and try to hit the share.
