  • AR guys. Your opinions are needed.

I'm checking out various options for my build and was wondering if it was worth the extra money to get a chrome bcg?

Spring for it if you want the peace of mind. Either way, you should be dilligent about cleaning. FWIW, I just bought a kit, and did not get a chromed BCG or barrel. If I ever have to fight it out with Wolf ammo in the jungles of panama, though, I may end up regretting the decision.

I think if I were to build another gun, it would include this:

If you own a tactical AR-15 carbine (direct-gas-impingement) that you're currently looking to upgrade, DefenseReview may just have the thing for you. We recently received a very high-grade AR-15 parts upgrade kit that we can't wait to try out on one of our tactical AR-15 carbines. It's called the "AR-15 Basic Kit" (Product Number 009-FZAR15-01), and it comes to us from the good folks at FailZero (FZ), which is a brand/division of UCT Coatings' subsidiary, UCT Arms LLC. Introduced this year at SHOT Show 2009, the FailZero "AR-15 Basic Kit was developed to significantly enhance both weapon reliability and maintainability. It consists of six critical …

Does a coating of teflon dry lube do anything for ease of cleaning or maybe increase the interval between cleanings?

Probably both, but I'm not sure how long it would last in that kind of environment.

Dupont has a dry film lubricant that can withstand up to 480f.

A unique dry-film lubricant that leaves a micro-thin, pure Teflon® fluoropolymer coating. This clean, long-lasting coating repels abrasive contaminants, resists corrosion, and reduces friction and squeaks. Excellent for high temperatures.

            *
Goes on wet to penetrate, then sets up with a clean, dry, white micro-thin coating
            *
Non-staining film bonds to most surfaces
            *
Lubricates parts to reduce sticking and squeaking
            *
Thin coating is excellent for tight tolerances and sliding tracks
            *
Helps materials resist chemical contaminants or water
            *
Acts as a protective coating for metal, plastic and rubber

            Applications:

            *
Use on surfaces requiring a dry, non-oily, non-staining and silicone-free film
            *
Perfect for tight tolerance applications where a micro-film lubricant is needed
            *
Chains, gears, cables, bearings, valves, shafts, tracks and slides
            *
Hinges, locks, fasteners, sliding surfaces, sealers, blades and bulb threads
            *
            Electrical switches and connectors
            *
Mowers, garden equipment, snow blowers, gaskets, seals, rollers, plastic gears, sleeves, ropes, drive belts and bushings
            *
Outdoor power equipment, firearms, fishing, cycling, sailing and marine
            *
            Cutting blades
            *
Gaskets, seals, rollers, plastic gears, sleeves, drive belts and bushings

Can withstand temperatures up to 480°F (250°C)

Do you need it? No, not really. Cool to have? Sure.

That's really neat. And really not that bad a price either. I might consider this for my SBR.

If you cant take 5 min to scrape some carbon off your bolt when your done shooting. Hell you dont even have todo this. Ive shot up to 500 rounds and had some buildup that came off in 2 min.

Clean your shit. I will say chrome is nice as shit basically wipes right off.

I almost always clean my guns after every shooting. If I can spray on a dry coating that will inhibit deposits or make cleaning any quicker, i'm game.

You remember the stories John use to tell us about the the three chinamen playing Fantan? This guy runs up to them and says, "Hey, the world's coming to an end!" and the first one says, "Well, I best go to the mission and pray," and the second one says, "Well, hell, I'm gonna go and buy me a case of Mezcal and six whores," and the third one says "Well, I'm gonna finish the game." I shall finish the game, Doc.
