I believe Best Buy is the best place to go. I recall them having both the Kindle and the variations on the Nook, as well as the lesser known Sony ones. Get a hands feel and see if any of their sales people are helpful.

Kindle 4 lyfe! $139 for Wifi only, $189 for the other.

I have the newest Kindle wifi only. I really like it. You don't have to only get stuff from Amazon either, you can download books from pretty much anywhere and convert them for the Kindle.

I use a program called Calibre, it manages all your books and can convert them to any format.

The Nook color runs android and can be rooted into a full tablet. IE - you can have a barnes and noble ereader with their library, plus the kindle app for android for the full kindle library, plus the open source ereader apps AND play angry birds on a 7 inch screen

This is all true but if your wife is serious about reading books then the new Nook Color is a bad choice. The Nook Color is a backlit LCD screen, much like the iPad.

The Kindle is an e-ink display, it looks like paper and gives off no light at all.

Don't get me wrong, I think the Nook Color is neat but it is more of a tablet than a e-reader. Some people can deal with staring at a LCD screen reading for hours, but most can't or at least wouldn't want to.

The previous Nook is e-ink however just like the Kindle.

good point. my wife uses an ipod touch as a kindle so i didn't think much of the differences in the screen types.

                Best idea yet.

Take her to the library and get a card. They are all the rage.

I really dont see throwing away that much money on something that will only be supported until the next great thing comes around.
