  • 1990 Coupe - 'budget' turbo kit

    Here's something I've never done, a build thread on a kit from start to finish. This is what I'd consider a budget kit from start to finish with before and after pics. This kit will include flipped shorties, blow through carb, powerglide and a dart iron eagle 331. The turbo is an 82MM. The wastegate is an ebay special, 60MM. Intercooler uses a 4" core, inlets and outlets. It should put down somewhere near 950rwhp and run 5.20's.

    Keep in mind, this is how I do things, not necessarily how someone else would do it. Also, the TURBO kit is budget, the supporting hardware is not. This is MY personal car fwiw - NOT an original 5.0 car, nothing special other than a plain ol' coupe. Yes, it will be driven regularly on the street.

    Some of the tools, procedures, and materials aren't necessarily available or feasible to everyone else.

    This is with the old 306,MPT70, wedge heads, Fcam, and a powerglide - on drag radials. It ran a best of 6.22@112 - the motor is still alive today.

    This is the dart iron eagle 331 n/a.

    This is the new motor, soon to be 88MM air/air. It's a dart iron eagle 331, pro comp heads, mechanical roller etc. Soon it will get dyno'd N/A just for grins...




    Here's the beginning - First, the turbo has to be mounted. The mount bolts to the pinch weld on the frame. (to be shown later).



    Next, the turbo mounted (scroll is not clocked yet, the apron has not been cut at this point)



    Next, the shorties have been modified. The original flange cut off and a vband ring welded in place. I didn't have any vbands, but had 2 matching clamps. I machined the rings to my own spec and used a 5 star clamp. First pic shows first operation in machinging the rings. Second pic jumps to a finished rings, and 3rd pic shows rings installed.




    Now, the beginning of the crossover -

    Crossover complete, minus wastegate. (normall I use a 3rd vband connector near the merge to make the long passenger side removable, but didn't have a matching clamp - not a big deal)

            Brooks, I'm curious why you don't use a divided T6 flange and turbine housing? easier to gate all 8?

              For starters, this is a loaner turbo it was an open housing and I already had the correct flange.

              The other part, it's hard to get the crossover pipes far enough up into the merge area to fully realize the benifit of the divided turbine housing - If you did, they'd likely block the lower part of the radiator completely, making it next to impossible to get a lower hose on it without doing some trickery. Such as, swapping side for side with the inlet/outlet hoses or modifying the lower part of the drivers tank to hell and back to make it work.

                seems like you could just cut a divider out of plate and drop it down into what you've already got. Would obviously take a good amount more fab time/effort/etc. to get it clean.

                Possibly to the point of not even being worth it. Was more curious if you'd compared the two and preferred the open volute vs. a divided bank/bank setup.

                I know on the I6 engines that are perfectly split front/rear, the divided setup helps spool-up a LOT

                  I'm certain there's some sort of benifit to gain from using a divided housing arrangement, no doubt. I'd tend to believe that you'd have to use the firing order to get any real benifit, and in doing so, you'd have to use cylinders from opposite sides of the motor in one collector - which is where it would get REAL complicated with tubing. If there was a way to get the firing order in order in their respective collectors where, say, 1-3-7 & 2 were one, and 6-5-4-8 were the other I'd go as far as to gaurantee some sort of benifit. In a mustang it would be tough...but I guess, it's only one tube from each side that would have to be split off - may not be that tough.

                  The I6, I could see bieng much easier and much more likely for someone to reap their benifits in the chassis they'd most likely be in.

                  I personally havent tested one vs. the other, but I'm positive there's some benifit - it's one of those things you'd have to weigh the work involved vs. the reward.

                  In this case (my car), the car will spool up easy as it is and will realize full peak power without having to get crazy with the setup. Now, maybe something like a billet 114 and a big turbine housing - where I'd need a lot of help getting that wheel spinning, it may be worth investigating.

                    Today's progress -

                    First, the downpipe flange - much too long to use as it sat, so it require some mods. I cut it back as far as possible and made it where the flange has a short pilot into the actual downpipe.

                    Next, the cutout for the compressor discharge. This makes the routing of that tube a LOT easier and shorter. Both aprons will be cut out like this, but replaced with a piece with less holes and more aesthetically pleasing.



                    ..and finally, the money shot. The turbo mounted and part of the downpipe done - complete with oxygen sensor bung.
