  • Sound deadener opinions needed

I'm wanting to install some sound deadener in the mustang. Seems like the industry standard is dynamat. I'd like to know if anyone has experience with anything else, like fat mat. Does more expensive=better?

Used RAAM mat in the past (till the prices went up) and it was great stuff(still is, just a little more now). Went with Fat Mat on my current truck, works well too. Get a good layer on the large open areas then go back with either a second layer or some strips in the larger areas. Ive lined the cabs of my last 3 crew cab trucks, so worth it No more road noise, resonance from loud exhaust and does help with the temp a little bit too in the hot summer and colder times of the year.

Peel-n-seal sorta works in the sense youre adding mass, but it stinks and doesnt hold up too well on side panels/roof when it gets warm in the summer.

Its about the same thickness but it smells like oil for awhile. I used it once and well it lasted ok but anywhere the exhaust was ran under the body it would get hot and slide around.

Overall I stick with fat mat as it dosent smell or as much oil based as the peel n seal type stuff

In my opinion dynomat isnt worth the price. Although I havent used the peel & seal from home depot ive heard numerous people say it has a bad odor when you install it for a few weeks. Im gonna be putting second skin in my truck in a couple weeks. Ive heard really good things about them.

Second Skin Audio was built with one goal in mind: provide the best car sound deadening materials in the world, without exception, and without compromise.

I like Dynamat Xtreme. I have gobs of it in my Explorer, and it's been worth every penny.

I'm putting Stinger Roadkill in the F250. I'm sure it's about the same.

Steer clear of Peel and Seal and any other garbage that isn't made for the purpose.

I've used it all, I'd use fatmat cheap and thick

I used over 600 feet deadening my car

Asphalt roofing material is for dumb asses. I have not sold that low end, minimal effectiveness product for more than 15 years. Dynamat kept raising prices and finally moved manufacturing overseas and continued to raise the price. The Stinger Roadkill Expert is the best value for a quality product. 36sqft=28lb of butyl based product that sticks very well and can be installed upside down. I have taken a few cars apart with fatmat in them and the product does not even bond to the car. Pure garbage. Spend some money for a decent product and get the results you want without it falling down from vertical or upside down installs. The other stuff is cheap for a reason.
There are other materials to consider as well. On the floor, I usually install the Stinger Carpet Pad over the Stinger Roadkill Expert. On the roof, I add a 1/4" or 1/2" foam pad to act as a sound deadener and insulator. The Hoodliner is also a good product.

Thanks for chiming in, Eric. Any chance you can PM me a price on some Stinger Roadkill? I'm going to be doing my 92 Mustang hatchback. Ideally, I'd like to do the whole car. If I have to purchase it a little at a time, I will start with the doors and floor. I have no idea how much I will need.

                        THIS

I used Second Skin in my Mustang and it made a HUGE difference. Also the peel n stick is only good to an extent. You need another buffer material to soak up the other frequencies like a high density foam or matting.

the fatmat takes a little more effort installing, but works fine IMO. That car I posted above has 4 12's in a ported box with 2500 watt amp, the car has trim EVERY WHERE, in fact the car's system hits so hard it vibrates screws out of the interior pieces all the time, literally blurs your vision. My point is, no rattles of any kind any where. The only thing that does rattle is the front bumper of the car and I think I cured that the other day when we put it all back together.

you do your projects the way you want and I'll do mine the way I want hows that sounds it may not be the show car way to accomplish what I wanted but it works good enough for what I was looking for
