  • First time to workout - Bowflex?

Im now 32 years old and never really worked out in my life. Well I did back in high school basketball, but thats been awhile. Other than golf, im pretty inactive. I do jog once in a while, but not as much as I need to. Im about 6'0" and 170-175lbs. Not fat by any means, but would like to tone up a little.

Wife and I have finished the garage (a/c, carpet, extra insulation, etc) and are turning it into a playrooom / area to put her treadmill and yoga stuff. I thought it would be nice to put something out there to for me. I was looking around on CL and saw some bowflex machines pretty cheap.

Would this be a good route for me? I dont want to spend a ton buying a million different free weights and benches, so I thought it might be a good start. Anyone have any recommendations on a particular model? or maybe any thoughts in general? maybe bowflex type thing isnt a good idea?

    thanks ahead of time.

The Bowflex is a horrible piece of crap. In all honesty, you'd be better off doing P90X or something like that if you haven't worked out in 15 years. Just something with a little guidance.

If you actually use a Bowflex, you can get a damn good workout from it. But that's only if you use it. P90x will kinda work but it's...well...p90x lol. You're going to hate doing it more than likely.

We just got the P90 DVD and I've actually done pretty well with it. I'm diabetic, and on the cardio workout, I get my blood sugar up to 200 or so, either suspend insulin (I am on an insulin pump) or take %80 less for 1 hour, and when I am done woring out, my sugar is always around 80 or lower. The "Sculpt" workout does not drop me as much, but the cardio sure kicks my blood sugar in the butt!

I had a Bowflex years ago (like in 2001), and used it for about 4 or 5 weeks, then started to cut back, and quit... So far on the P90, I have been doing it for 6 weeks and still enjoy it. We also bought 2 of the Biggest Loser DVD cardio workouts. Got them on Amazon for $20 with shipping.
