  • Looks like Forbes was not alone...

Thought I would post this in here since it has to do with guns...but move it if you feel otherwise. I am glad I do not own a storage locker, much less with valuables in it

BURLESON — Paula Downs' collection of sports cards was said to be astounding.

"It makes me sick every time I think about it," she said. "It's just sad that's all we got left."

Thieves took all but two trays of baseball and football cards that Downs had in storage, including Troy Aikman as a rookie along with Roger Staubach and Dan Marino's earliest cards.

Only a few hundred are left. Thousands were stolen.

But that's not all. Burglars also got guns — at least 20 rifles and pistols.

In all, more than $50,000 worth of belongings were stolen.

"I'm devastated. I'm sick. I want to throw up," Downs said. "That's the kids' stuff. I'm never going to be able to pay for their college."

She inherited it all from her dad, who lost his struggle with cancer last fall at age 64.

Downs figured the cards and guns would be safer in storage than around her children at home, but burglars proved her wrong when they broke into her unit at Willow Creek Storage in the 2900 block of Southwest Wilshire Boulevard in Burleson last Friday.

Police said surveillance cameras malfunctioned and did not capture the crime on tape.

The owner of that storage complex refused to talk to News 8, but investigators said it was his business that reported the crime.

Even though no surveillance video exists, Burleson police said they were able to collect some evidence at the scene.

Investigators said no other unit was touched, leading Downs to consider the possibility that someone targeted hers.

"I'm also afraid they're going to use the guns the way they shouldn't be used. I don't want them to hurt anybody," she said.

        Should or shouldn’t?

I think along the lines of CJ here. I would never have that stuff in storage.

If I can’t see it or at least touch it every day (guns that is) then I would worry about them constantly....

It amazes me that people do this crap.

What do they pay? 100 dollars a month for storage?

                100 x 12 = 1200 dollars.

You can buy a pretty decent gun safe for 1200 dollars.

multiply it by 20 years and you end up storing valuables which you have to sell just to cover the storage fees.

yeah i had to move and i only have a few guns , but fuck i was worried about my stuff getting stolen. I literally buried them under everything else in the unit.

But my point was the little flimsy plastic roll down doesn't exactly exude confidence in the safety of your belongings .
I'm not going to fault anyone for doing it, but I couldn't do it for long. I was half expecting my dfwstangs millions in belongings to be gone one day.

My wife even got an unexpected call from the sheriffs office one day and missed it. she called back but couldn't find out what it was about.
I about fucking flipped out and drove up there to verify that isn't what they were calling about.

I would not be happy without a 700lbs+ safe and concrete anchors....I am actually saving up for something similar for all three of my guns

The anchors are more important than the weight, so remember not to skimp on those. The steal incredibly heavy safes by tipping them over onto golf balls, and rolling them out. If they can't get a mechanical advantage, and turn them over, though, they usually don't mess with the safe.

Or a furniture dolly which costs about 15$ and doesn't leave any evidence.
