That's why there airfare is so cheap to start, add all the fee's and you're back to square one.

Fly southwest, where your first 2 bags fly free. Last week I flew round trip to California for 255, total.

Not really. 3 of us flew to Detroit for $875 round trip last month on Spirit, we looked at all other airlines and the cheapest was going to be near $1400. You do have to pay an extra fee for some things but even when you add in those extras the prices still blow anyone else out of the water. I would use them again, the service was just as good as any other airline.

Southwest would be a good alternative also but they don't fly everywhere and that includes Detroit unfortunately

Southwest has like 10 flights/day to Detroit, they just aren't direct.

You are probably correct but flying with a 6 year old we only wanted direct flights.

I agree the best thing we do in Detroit is get out as soon as we can, now northern Michigan is a completely different story and that's where we went.

When I was 6 I would've been sold on getting to fly more than once. I loved air travel.

On a recent flight we made to (and from) Seattle, at least half the other passengers had two carry on bags with the majority of 'em being larger than my checked baggage.

It f*ckin' insane what these people try to get away with, and the clueless gate attendants are not helping police the situation at all.

I hate flying anywhere these days.

btw.. love that suitcase coat idea.

I just flew Spirit a couple of months ago. You are allowed 1 free "personal item" that has to fit under the seat in front of you (they give you dimensions). My family of three flew to oregon and we only checked one bag, and packed a lot of stuff in our "personal items". If you get creative and pack only what you need you can avoid extensive fees. They even charge for peanuts and water on the damn flight, so we brought our own snacks and water (purchased after the security screening in the airport).
