  • linux on my netbook

i have a toshi nb305-n410 that currently runs win7 on it.. slowly.

i'd like to convert to something like fedora.. but from what i've read the various flavors all seem to have some compatibility issues. Is there anything out there that will work out of the box on this machine? otherwise would going back to xp or something similar be more fruitful?

In IE @Admin,go to pcpistop.con/betapit grant perms for the active X's, create an acct and run the test. When it's complete, copy/paste the link from your browser in your reply.

Ok, several things here. Do you run on battery often? If not, set the power plan to performance to not throttle the cpu and ram. Run disk cleanup and have it remove all but the most recent restore point. Dl and run ccleaner, but if you rely on browser history/login storage, make sure they're not checked.
After those are done, DL and install Auslogics Disk Defrag, go to Advanced under options, check Delete Temp, Defrag in VSS Mode and Move Sys Files to the start of the disk. Run Optimized Defrag.

Upon completion, reboot and rerun that test and post the link again.

Ok, when running on battery, it throttles the cpu and ram to save battery. Also, you're below the 50% disk space threshold that performance decreases noticeably after.

i will plug it in when i run the next set of tests. I can also clean up some of the misc files and junk on here, i know there's tons of mp3s and divxs buried on the drive somewhere.

so do you have any reccommendations for a distro of linux to toss on this thing?

Tbh, I don't use Linux very often, but when I do, I use Suse or Ubuntu. Suse is very stable and has all the end user config stuff that they've started stripping out of ubuntu and I've had better luck w/compatibility out of it.

i haven't messed with linux in probably 10 years.. i just want something relatively light and that will run well on the limited processor this thing has.

Try changing the power plan and see if that improves the responsiveness. What you've done so far brought the score up in their database by 6 points.

Edit:I see what you're talking about w/issues and Linux on it via Goog. If you choose to use Linux, it seems Mint will be the best fit.

i'll run it again in "high performance" mode and see how it fares. Also, for some reason i feel like i have 4gb of ram in here, but i may be mistaken. i know it's only seeing 2 though.

thanks for the link.. back shortly.

i like mint, have an acer and dell mini that both boot/run mint off of usb, wifi on the acer was a pain but in the end the kids could go to webkinz using the minis with safari so it was worth it
