  • Burnt pistol

I have a little Llama .380 pistol that I picked up years ago that has been a good little gun for me. My cousin was mugged a few months ago so I loaned it to her for her truck and everything was cool. I got a call last week that her house burned to the ground while she was at work and lost everything. The family and community has been pitching in to help her, her husband and son get clothing and to clear off the mess from where her house was.

I gave it several days before I called to check on her. While talking to her, she told me my pistol was under her mattress at home when the house fire started because she had to drop her truck off for an oil change and she couldn't carry it with her at work. I think everyone knows where this is going.

My pistol was wedged in between a mattress and box springs when the fire hit the bedroom. Evidently it got hot enough to start cooking off the rounds in the magazine, blowing the floor plate off. When I picked it up today, it was jammed open with a stick in the chamber and I asked why. Seems one of the rounds was stuck in the barrel and she didn't know if it'd go off. I took it home and spent the better part of 2 hours trying to get the round out to find out that there wasn't 1 round, there was 4. Three of the rounds still had intact primers with burst brass and one had a spent primer. I dug 4 FMJ's out of the magazine well and barrel where they fired and spent another half an hour breaking the magazine loose.

Everything is soaking in gasoline so that when I start stripping the burnt plastic and soot off of it, it's not going to be terribly annoying but I thought I'd share with yall.

I was upset for them but my mind clicked over almost immediately to "How is my pistol?" I had to stop myself and wait for her to call me about it. The wife has to remind me what "appropriate" actions in this instance are.

PM me your address Jester. I could use the help. I've been tinkering with it to try to get the molten lead and plastic out of it. It took me quite a bit to break the slide loose.

Why are you trying to save it?

All the steel is annealed, to a now unknown hardness. It wouldn't be safe to shoot anymore, even if you got it cleaned up and functional.

Not so sure I'd trust it even if it looked ok. Heat can both distort and degrade the mechanical properties of metals, and you probably can't fully know what temperature or heat treats we're on that gun.

If by anneal you mean heat treat then yes. That's what I was getting at with my prior post.

The concern would not be that he ruined the "annealed" metal. It would be that he annealed the heat treated metal. Or even over aged the heat treated metals. Understand your material terms before you use them scrote.

Right on. Thanks. I meant that the steel had become annealed by the fire. I didn't mean it was previously annealed. If that's not correct, I'm still willing to be wrong.
