2001 ford Taurus dohc

Lady lives across from me has an 01 with 113k miles and has the 3L dohc.

Has been sitting there for about 2 years, started occasionally the first year or so.

Noticed she was trying to jump start it, went to help.

Fuel pump isn't turning on, and no pressure are the rail, gauge shows 1/4 tank, fuel pump fuse is good, and the relay clicks, swapped with another, same result.

That's an issue, plus it needs a back glass. Other than a few dings its pretty clean and the interior was kept up really well.

She told me she stopped driving it due to her ex husband saying the engine was going out and Firestone had quoted her a high amount and stated the same thing... So she says. She also admitted not knowing much, so there might be some hope. Says it would hesitate when getting on the highway, maybe the pump was going out all along?

She was asking 600ish before I told her it needed a fuel pump.

Thinking of offering 400. Fix the small shit and figure out what the original problem was. Any wiggle room?

Any insight on the dohc motors?

My girlfriend has an 01 with the 3.0ohv w/ 195k and it's a good little car, 28mpg.

For some damned reason, people don't like the DOHC motors. I do, they have smooth power delivery and get decent gas mileage. I only had one and it was sludged to hell, changed it out and it ran great. Had a hell of a time selling it, finally let it go for $1200.

I have had 2 of them, 1 went to Leah's friend and the other is sitting at my shop needing a new engine. I had to change the fuel pump in the one I still have before the engine dropped few valves. And before you think about a swap you may want to make sure you have a lift or access to one. The only way that motor comes out is thru the bottom sub frame and all.

I did it out the top, but it was a rat bastard. Dropping the subframe is the way to go.

It's most likely the fuel pump. If you can't hear it prime for a second or 2 right when the key is turned, it is most likely out. Especially with only a quarter of a tank, the pump should be audible with low fuel levels. I would buy it, replace the pump, filters, and clean the injectors, replace the batt, and sell it to me for 800.

as for hestitating on the highway, it's a common issue with the intake runner control module, it sticks/stops working and keeps the runners short causing a loss in low end power. cheap fix.

Same thing that happens to the B head Cobra and Mark VIII motors. Seafoam should fix it.

On the later duratec's they ditched the runner control modules for simplicity and added a plastic intake. It made them dogs. My '05 duratec is a hell of a lot less powerful than my old '98 duratec. I've owned 4 taurus/sables with duratec motors. As the years went on the cars got less quality, they removed piping from the trunk carpet, took off the rear disc brakes, removed chrome from the interior door handles, etc. So an 01 is a nicer car than a later model. I would just make sure that you service that transmission immediately if you buy it. The AX4N/S transmissions are crap and are the weak point.

I have had it both ways, deleted in my 96 4V swap and functional in my 97 Cobra. I like for them to be functioning. 4.10 gears would have gone a long way to helping it out, but the stock 3.27's were BAD with no IMRC's.

Yeah I would not recommend ditching it, they are dogs, no low end at all. It's really noticeable.
