So i'm fairly green at this and want to start building up my supply. Other than reloading, where do you guys consistently find the best price on NON-FMJ .223? Basically just some to use at the range but not the junk stuff.

Well, as far as a different range, thatthats fine if it's just me. I'm the farthest one out from friends & family so it's easier for me to drive closer to them then have all them come to my side of town.Comment

I read through it. I'd be fine doing it once I have someone shows me the ropes. Until then I don't want to make shit ammo and it not fire or blow up, just paranoid I guess. The reason for the thread was to see where the more experienced people were buying from, other than FMJ and those who reloaded. What's everyone's opinion on steel or brass coated steel cased HP? Reliable? Too dirty? Make sure you clean the rifle good after use? It's like $.26/round. I know you can't reload it but just for using at the range?Comment

Reloading is the way to go.
With a cheap single stage press you can bang out some quality ammo.
If you are just looking for factory shit to blast. Buy wolf,tula,brownbear, and so on.
I was not afraid of blowing myself up, but i was still leary. A friend let me come over and he showed me how todo it. Now he is a braver man that i am, as He will reload cases that i would not dream of using.
If i was going to build a single stage kit i would buy just a lee single stage press, Find a rcbs uniflow, and 505 scale. The lee stuff in the kit will work, but its like driving a geo when you could have a caddy. It is all about repeatability.Comment

I didn't know anything about reloading either... Just chill and hang out or offer to help when someone posts about reloading parties etc. It really isnt that complicated and I have learned a thing or two about case prep, case measuring, tumbling and cleaning the brass, reshaping them to a standard casing size. Its fun stuff, its cheap, and its therapeutic really... It just takes money to get started to buy the press and primers and powder. But its about the same as 2k rounds of brass to start, and in no time youll be laughing at the past and wondering why the hell you never started before. I actually have better accuracy and consistancy with case length and overall length with wolf than factory brass.
Here is an example of what reloading can do.
All are 5 shot groups at 100 yards with a reg old gov profile 16inch non freefloated m4 off a grip pod mangled to stock handgaurds.
Pmc bronze 55gr fmj
Umc 200 round bulk pack 55gr fmj
These are my hand loads. working up a load.
23.7gr of h335 with a 55gr hornady v max flat base using the pmc brass at 2.250 overall length
24gr of h335 with 55gr hornady v max flat base pmc brass. 2.250 col.
This is the best load i have yet except my fuck up with the flyer. I have not had a chance to shoot any more due to weather. I pulled the last shot because i was excited haha.
