  • Rick Perry Will not seek re-election

    http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/p...ident/2497773/

Texas Gov. Rick Perry said Monday he will not seek re-election next year, bringing an end to a record run as chief executive of the Lone Star state.

"The time has come to pass on the mantle of leadership," Perry, a Republican, said at a news conference in San Antonio surrounded by hundreds of supporters.

Perry, 63, is already the longest-serving governor in Texas history and has been the Lone Star state's chief executive since December 2000 when George W. Bush left to become president. Perry's departure sets up the biggest political shuffle in Texas since he took office.

Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott, a rising Republican Party star, has been making moves as though he will seek the governorship next year. He recently released a video, narrated by former senator-actor Fred Thompson, introducing himself to voters – even though Abbott has won statewide elections five times. Abbott also has amassed $18 million in campaign funds.

Perry left open the possibility that he would try again and run for the White House, saying "any new decisions" he will announce "at the appropriate time." He recently rehired Mark Miner, a longtime aide who was one of the advisers behind his 2012 presidential bid.

I really hope someone other than Abbott makes a run. Abbott is a lunatic with no testicular fortitude. Bad things lie ahead if he gets elected.

Pretty sure Windbag Davis represents Fort Worth District 10.

I hope this is not a scenario like we have nationally, where a lot of people thought Dubya was the devil and it couldn't get any worse. Like it or not, Texas has fared pretty well financially. Governors have been getting bounced out all over the country because of the financial woes of their perspective states, and we've sat down here with low unemployment numbers and no state income tax. Though I'm not a big Perry fan, we can do worse. I hope we don't reach a point where we wish he hadn't left.

I see where you are coming from, but there are a TON of people that are going to vote left just because of recent shenanigans. I also know a lot of Conservatives, like me, that flat out will not vote for Abbott. I'd vote for the guy out of Houston before I voted for Abbott.

I meant the guy that ran last time. Bill White, or something like that.

I'm a little uneasy about it. I'm happy with how things are/are going right now.

Me too. I am not a fan of Perry but I don't want to upset the good economy and conservative bias in our state. If a Dem gets elected, where are we going to go when they start killing corporate tax incentives and implement a state income tax?

Just think.... Dewhurst may try to run....

I disagree with Perry on a lot, but there isn't anyone better to replace him so far....

I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place. If I vote for a Democrat because of social issues, I'm going to get dicked on fiscal issues. If I vote for a Republican because of fiscal issues, I'm going to get dicked on social ones.

Where the fuck are the social liberals and fiscal conservatives rolled into one? Let people do what they want (within reason) and don't charge them out the ass for simply breathing.
