Um...you will want 3.55's and maybe even 3.73's. Most 5 liter CMC cars are running 3.55's but those that put valve springs in and aren't afraid to spin the motors put 3.73's in.

Personally I would run 3.73's at all TX tracks with the exception of TWS and maybe ECR. Spin it if you want to run at the front!

I am going a diff route to start, 255 tires, 25"OD, I want to run TWS in 4th, should be good for 138mph or so @ 6200, If I had a .82 OD I'd be running more gear for sure.

We have .55's in the mont and have never touched 5th on track.

With a 275/40/17 you should be good for 133mph in 4th @ 6200, 255 tire is good for 130, I'm not sure what the car will do at TWS but I wanted a little headroom, my miata does ~134 with 12.5:1 weight to power, mustang will be at 11.9:1.

You might be doing 122 CCW and 130-135 with a tailwind CW. Run the 3.73's with the 275 and don't look back. Others have tried the 255 game lost...badly. you are putting a lot more heat into the tire and they give up the ghost.

Also, not sure if your speed/ratio/tire height calcs are taking into account tire growth but you gain a little bit over 100mph.

another thing to consider is to build the car once and learn it well. Don't build it and then rebuild it and relearn it again.

Anyway, $1000's of dollars of knowledge for free....

Budget is getting very tight so I have to roll a crappy OD for now, I plan on going T56 or .82 OD mid season, I will prob swap rear gears at that time, I already have a set of 255 RA1's to burn before the RR switch, hopefully I can pull off top 5 . In Miata land a wider tire w/o the rim width to back it up is not any faster, heat is a concern though. I'd love to be running 275's on a 17x9.5 18lb RPF1 with .82od and 3.73's, hopefully mid year!

255's will have you running at the back. The Texas field is pretty fast.

You will need to throw pretty much everything you learned in a Miata out the window. You MUST keep in mind that these are 1979 Ford Fairmonts and they don't turn worth a crap. Sure they have power but they get eaten in the corners and under braking. That 255 tire, especially under braking is going to hurt you.

I get that you are keeping the budget tight and that is the same as the bulk of the racers in CMC...however, you are stepping into a lion's den and need to bring a bigger gun!

Also, even if running the 255's....go ahead and put 3.55's or 3.73's in it. You won't be on a big track till April anyway.

Well I will stick with the 3.55's they are already installed in the rear so it will save time. Thanks for the input, I think the fact that the RA1's are not shaved is going to help keep me slow too, guess i'm just fucked :'(

Not shaved! If you can swing it, keep them fresh for rains later! Awesome combo of narrow full tread 255 would rock in the rainy stuff!

Look on the AICMC texas board. there are a few used 275's and a couple new ones going for a great price. RA1's last till the cords so grab a couple sets and learn the car on them.

Hell, if you are interested, I might give you a set 275's that I have as rains. They are OLD (date code 04!)and hard as a rock, but have plenty of tread left. I just need to figure out what I want for rains in 2014 to replace them. I may use some BFG Rivals since we are running BFG's this next year on our cars.

Interesting. I heard they suffered a bit. However, it is supposed to be pouring here tomorrow so I will get a good test on them in the WRX. When in doubt....test it yourself! LOL!
