  • .308 projectile input

Need some input on a match/competition .308 round for a 20" barrel with a 1:12 twist. Range will be between 100 - 900yds with stage that includes a 1000-1200yd target.

Looking for input on projectiles to use.

The 185gr Juggernaut is about as good as it gets in 308 as far as usable bc and velocity tradeoff goes. When I ran a 308 I used the 155gr Palma Sierra MatchKing but they need to be ran hard (2850+) to have a advantage.

You are not going to have good results with that twist rate if you want to run heavy bullets so you may be stuck using ones in the 150gr range.

1:12 will be more than sufficient for everything I listed. Berger even 1:12 as the recommendation of twist for the 185gr juggernaut otm.

What about the Hornady A-Max? I've got access to 200 for a good price through a buddy.

What weight? The 178 is favored by a lot. I have only used 7mm Amax bullets and like them a lot although they need a little sorting for length compared to sierra or berger. I don't mind it due to price difference.

Why not just use 168 gr HPBT match bullets? Sure it's a mil spec type bullet but almost every manufacturer has them.

I've shot a lot of A max bullets. The semi auto action does a pretty good job of ruining the pretty red plastic tips. Cycle one and then extract it without firing and see for yourself. In a bolt gun, maybe A max bullets will survive and M1A makes those tips worthless.

The 168's don't have the efficiency for long range.

Reason I mentioned the A-Max is because seems to be very popular with the .260 Rem & 6.5 CM shooters. Granted those are lighter projectiles, I wondered if it carried into the heavier projectiles. These will be loaded for a bolt action rifle.

They are a good bit cheaper is why they are so popular. They perform great for the price as well, I like them since they are a great combination bullet for target and hunting.

                        another vote for 178 AMAX
I don't see how you can go wrong there, besides that a 20" barrel is far from ideal to make a 1000yrd shot.

I disagree that AMAX is good for hunting, most reports show they explode into a bunch of little bits on impact. weight retention is only like 50%

You'll be hard pressed to find a cup and core bullet out there that doesn't loose 50% of their weight. The two reliable ones I know of are the partition and A Frame both of similar design that doesn't yield good ballistics.

true if you hunt at extended ranges (i.e. >400yrds) you will need the BC

                            but most don't

I intend to use the 180 federal fusion / deepcurl for out to 400 , maybe 500 yards. It should not lose 50% of it's weight and skew itty bitty pieces of bullet all through game meat

I haven't had any issues with pieces or fragments of bullets in meat. I don't shoot on shoulder unless i have to then in that case it's high shoulder. Running a bullet that heavy (180gr) even a cup and core will not loose much unless it's moving really fast.
