  • 10mm love

I've had several phases in my love of firearms and the Second Amendment. It started with 1911 love. Then Glock love. Then 1911 love again. And an ongoing love affair with revolvers (I want to pick up a Ruger SP 101 or GP100). But I now have moved onto 10mm love.

It started over 15 years ago when I shot a friend of mines Glock 20. I might even say it happened before that, way before that. Like back in the 80's when Don Johnson was carrying the Bren Ten on Miami Vice. What a powerful round that was still manageable with the recoil but compact enough to hold 15 rounds on a full size Glock frame.

But what really got my interest back again was a couple of summers ago when I went camping in the New Mexico back country and felt a little undergunned carrying a 1911. I felt I needed something a little more powerful than a .45 ACP with more capacity. Then last summer I bought a Glock 21 because I wanted to be able to carry more .45 ACP rounds (plus the fact that I shot a lot of it) but also with the thought of converting it to 10mm with a barrel swap and using it as my bear defense gun.

I should have done more research before last summers trip as 10mm conversion barrels were not to be found anywhere and it wasn't until a couple of months ago I was able to pick one up. Finally got around to buying a couple hundred rounds of 10mm FMJ and taking it to the range last week. Damn I'm digging this. And I just finished reading a story about a guy who defended himself from a bear attack in Alaska with a Glock 20 (he shot off his toe in the process LOL!).

The most popular and widely respected voice in America for your gun rights, breaking 2nd Amendment news, and everything else you need to know as a gun owner...

So far I'm using the stock recoil rod and spring from the 21/45 ACP. It's been reliable so far but I think I want something more than the factory plastic setup. Any ideas of what I should use with it? I'll be posing this question over on Glock Talk but I know there's a bunch of guys on here that shoot 10mm/Glock 20's so I figured I'd start here. Also what would you guys suggest for a good bear round?

Buffalo bore hard cast 220 grain for bear. Fires fine in my delta gold cup but had a few light primer strike in my glock 29 with lone wolf barrel. Was told to replace the springs to take care of issue but it never had issues with other ammo .run double tap in it for carry everyday and no issues.

Thanks, I'll look into that. How's the recoil on that 29? I thought about picking one of those up as a backup to 21/10mm when I go camping.

Thanks, I should have looked into them first as I've bought other parts off of them in the past. Should have mentioned but mine is a Gen4 but I found the correct part there. I'm guessing that this will work with either 10mm or .45 ACP as it appears to be the same part right? Or would the spring rates be different between the two different calibers?

Also guys I'm looking at suggestions for a 10mm 1911, something affordable. Maybe an RIA?

No issues with recoil on the 29 . Lone wolf barrel is compensated and easy to hold on target .been wanting a sig 220 10 mm to add to collection one of these days.

I've put thousands of full power rounds through my 29 with the factory recoil spring assembly and no issues. I recently upgraded the trigger and connector and it smoothed out and lightened up quite a bit

Mine's snappy but not too bad with hot 155 and 180 grain handloads.

It's not a 1911, but check out the EAA Witness. I love the 1911 look and feel but IMO the Witness feels so much better. Great guns and very inexpensive, too.

I've only broken one Glock recoil rod and that was around 15 years ago on a Glock 27 shooting Corbon +P loads. I recently broke the recoil rod on my Springfield Armory Lighweight Champion Operator which is also plastic. I thought that 21 recoil spring might be different from a 20 which is why I thought it might be a good idea to swap it out whenever I shoot 10mm. Any thoughts on that anybody??

As far as the Witness, I've heard nothing but good things about them but the reason I was thinking about going the 1911 route is holster compatibility. But who knows, I'll see what they cost and go from there. This is more on the wish list at this point anyway.

The Witness is based on the CZ75 but I think it's a little bigger - not sure how holster compatibility would work

Pwrsonally chase that ruger bug. I've got a gp100 and sp101 both in 357 you can run through, as well as a 9mm sp101.

I thought about that at one time as well until I looked into easy ammo availability and changed my mind. Nice concept but no thanks. I think I'd pick a 9mm SP101 over the 327.

Oh yeah, handloading all the way.

Buffalo Bore! I was wondering what you meant by BB. I forgot all about them. Man you got all the bases covered! One day I'd love to own an Alaskan but I got to many other guns in front of it right now in my firearms bucket list

With what Underwood and Buffalo Bore offer, I don't think handloading is going to be necessary as they already make some impressive stuff. But eventually I would like to get into handloading but that's for another thread.
