  • ar wouldn't cycle 556 just sharing

My AR stopped cycling 556 (jammed when feeding leaving 2 bad dents in casing) but had no issues with 223 so I blamed the new ammo. Ammo worked fine in other AR so tried different 556 but same problem and 223 still worked.

Turned out that I had over 2 years of gunky oil built up in the buffer tube, cleaned it out with wd40 applied very light gun oil and it works great again.

I'll start cleaning out the buffer tube every year.

If you had an AK you wouldn't ever have to worry about cleaning.

I deep clean mine (other than field cleaning) including this at least once a year.

I wipe it down every time I clean the rifle.. Just habit after the Army and takes no time..

a couple extra minutes when doing normal cleaning of the rifle keeps you from having to do a 'deep' clean later.

I don't really clean my guns.

I know a few people like that.. lol. Like I said, just habit on my part.

I did break the habit of a full cleaning after every range visit. I'll just wipe everything down and run a patch or two through through them on every other visit..

armorers in the navy have little to do but clean weapons all day. I spent way too much time around those guys. I field strip and clean at a minimum after shooting. I love the smell of CLP in the morning.

If it quits shooting, I just hit it with brake cleaner and a brush. Throw on some oil and call it as day.

I clean and oil my handguns (especially my primary CCW) after shooting them but I don't concern myself too much with the AK. Haven't shot my Ruger AR15 yet so I'll determine it's needs once I see how well it works.
