  • DIY wiring harness

    Let's say I needed to build a wiring harness for my classic that is no longer offered by the aftermarket. Where would one go to get the appropriate wire in the correct gauge and colors and connectors and plugs of the vintage variety? Hell, I guess it wouldn't even have to be of the vintage variety.

    Shop their TXL (automotive thin wall)

    Connectors I use a lot of Deutsch or Weatherpak stuff. You can source Deutsch through MSD part numbers and pay a little more or you can get it from Ladd Industries but they mainly deal in bulk orders for shops.

    Relays you can get from racetronix also. Or anywhere really. I like the bussman stuff or the www.leashelectronics.com stuff also. All EFI related relays in my car are Leash.

    You can get real fancy with shit or you can get real basic. All depends on how much you want to spend.

      This is for an old F100. I would rather keep it simple and as inexpensive as possible.

        Keith, what's the trick to laying it out and having it look good? My shit always ends up looking like a cobbled together rats nest

          It gets expensive with nylon split and expanding loom, wire stays, etc.

          I spent a ton of money on spare wire, connectors, etc.



          I ordered up tons of loom and every color wire I can get in 10-15 lengths ahead of time. That way when it comes time to actually start, you don't have to stop and order something. Because that usually turns into "I can make it work with ____ that I have on hand". Which is what leads to half assed work.

            10-4, I think I'm gonna try going thru each sensor. Untangling and laying out each wire and temporarily zip tie it in place until the whole harness is done then come back and run the nylon split and whatever tape at each joint.

              Take lots of pictures and hand written notes about which color wire goes into which side of the connectors. You used to be able to buy replacement pins from www.eficonnection.com but I think he is pretty much out of all old stock Ford stuff that you would need for pre 96 era stuff. I have a bunch left over though and now I use all Holley's source for their pins. Maybe I need to take inventory and just sell the whole lot. I even have a couple brand new 60 EEC plugs and the pins to go with it for ECUs.

                  use trash bag ties when building it. there's always a drawer full of them . if your old harness is so so you can replace wires that are bad.

                    At $800 plus it's out of the question for me right now. Besides, it's just the taillight harness that I would be building.

                      I've done a couple of old cars that just needed a few sections replaced/repaired. What I did was removed the existing harness as best as I could without cutting it. Laid it all out on the floor, took inventory of what connectors, wire colors etx would be needed to build a new harness. Order them up, laid the old harness back out then began assembling a new harness laying it on top of the old harness as I went to ensure the lengths were just right. It worked out just fine and wasn't too difficult. If there are wires missing, cut etx you may just have to research what connectors you will need. Ie: tail light sockets, marker lights etc.

                        If it's something like that old F100 and you are not worried about it being original, check out EZ Wiring. Most of there stuff is on ebay.

                          Eventually, when $ permits, I will be replacing the entire wiring with a good quality harness. For now I just need to get the taillight section sorted out because it's in real bad shape.

                          Good info though, thanks. Always good to know Painless and Autowire are NOT the only choices.

                            just buy 3 rolls of wire and redo your rear harness. all you need is tail light and 2 turn signal . a 10ft roll of each will do it.
