  • Update: 1965 Stang

So last Saturday I picked up a 1965 v8 the mighty 289 with automatic transmission.

Since then I have been busy with a few jobs and a few issues but last night I was able to at least remove the gas tank and begin cleaning the car.

I would attach more pictures but don't have enough room on here so I will post this one of the car.

I am still conflicted on when I should surprise my dad, I want to give him his surprise now and show him the car how it sits and have nice little project for us to work on together and maybe have our completion deadline be for fathers day or complete the car and give it to him on fathers day.

what conflicts me is I know how excited I get when I work on a project so I figure the "excitement" of getting closer to completing it and working on it might be fun. but then again who wouldn't want their "dream car" complete and ready to just put gas in it!?!?

mods if this is getting to be in wrong thread please feel free to move to appropriate place.

    Nice Dad / Son project.

Good luck holding your "excitement" with out telling him.

that's the hardest part!! we had a job Saturday, Same Saturday I was to pick up the car that evening and while we were working he spotted a 67 about 8 houses down the street. I literally had to tell him to quit starring and get back to work, when in the inside im thinking "if you only knew what im picking up tonight"!!

Funny story: I hate mowing grass, yes from time to time we get to mow grass with my business. So my dad mows the grass at my house, so today I have to go get a lock to lock door to garage and cover the doors bottom to top glass so he cant see in the garage. My refrigerator is beside the garage door and he always goes inside my house when he is done to get a drink! So my mom has been thinking of little things for him to do at their house to give me time to "fix" my garage door so he can come mow.

That's awesome man. In order to help answer that question, what do you think it's going to take to get it "done"?

Clean out gas tank, I have starting doing that already, ordered new pick up and sending unit,

heres what I need to do

          clean fuel lines
change oil/plugs prime oil pump, going to put mystery oil in cylinders and turn over by hand
          flush radiator
          go thru carb
          needs battery
          dye carpet

hopefully it will fire up after that

need to work on brakes, they are not working

I would like to get all "mechanical" problem fixed before it goes to paint so im not working on it with a new paint job.

after paint it will be assemble, I have all interior and all trim, I will replace anything as im putting it together that I see needs replacing

Sounds like you've mostly got the fun stuff to play with. Not bad at all. You gonna paint it yellow?

Id run over to dallas mustang and get new carpet, it's cheap enough to not dick with dying it.

I believe so! and no I think that was one of the terms of the deal, that the car would have to be painted original 1965 year color so it will be Rangoon Red! Luckily my dad loves red so its a match!!

You bet. Any color you want..........as long as its a color available on that model, that year.

I still think you should go original. Prairie bronze with Ivy Green interior.

And I might make another suggestion. Make a list to "to Do's" and "to buy". Excel spread sheet, note pad, crayons, what ever you are comfortable with. It really helps me organize my time and schedule jobs. If you can look at as small jobs instead of a big picture, you won't become overwhelmed.

But then you get overwhelmed at the huge number of small jobs to complete!
