website question

I am building a website that wont be for profit or selling anything. More of a hobby site. I want to use some general pictures I found on Google search. Is it a copyright violation or illegal to use pictures found out on the internet for your website? Its next to impossible to find the owner of some random picture so Im not sure if this is okay. anyone have info on this?

If the work is copyrighted you can be held liable, however there are many free to use images out there and sourcing the material is enough for some of the owners. What type of media are we talking about here?
