  • Crazy caliper conundrum

As part of the 2000ish Explorer-to-1966 Mustang rear end swap extravaganza, I've run into a weird one.

I ordered new calipers, and they're the right part numbers, but this is what I got...

ExplorerCalipers by Blake Hooser, on Flickr

They look so distinctly different, I'm not sure what to do here. If memory serves (I regrettably did not take photos), the cores I turned in look like the caliper on the right.

I'm guessing that they're different variations on the right part, and that they'll likely both work, but it'd be kind of nice if they matched, ya know?

First effort to track down a different one led to finding another c577 that looks just like this one. To add to the challenge, very few local Autozones seem to have these in stock, and when they do, they only have one of the two sides.

    What should I do?

The Autozone hub store on Belknap probably has several in stock. I would take both sides to try for a matched set.

      What to do

Stay away from Autozone and go to a real parts store.

That's funny, I just got the same advice from my friend at work. I think I might have to try that. Thanks man!

Damage is done. They already have my cores, so I'm stuck in the system. To their credit, the guys at my local store in Benbrook have been really cool. I bought parts for 3 different cars to get these brakes squared away (Maverick, Granada, Explorer) and their computer system does not make that easy.

That place is a madhouse on weekends, bring something to sit on while in line.

My Explorer calipers look like the caliper on the right. And like you said, they look to be revisions of each other.

Ordering an other C577 will probably get you the matching one.

I am sure you already have experienced this but when you start retrofitting parts, you will have a lot of "lets try this" and "I'd like to return this please" situations.

Yeah I think you're right on all points. I tried a different location that had C577 in stock, and it was the same one like on the left. We'll see what the hub store has. Thanks Kevin. The confirmation on what you've got is really helpful too.

It's a bit out of your way but the Autozone @ 7036 BLVD 26
RICHLAND HILLS (A couple miles south of Hooters) has the right one. I spoke with Stephanie and had her compare it to the pic in their system.

Odd. When I did Jeep TJ brakes a while back after I got them installed the fronts were locked the F up. Pulled em off and measured the old rotors and they were like 4mm different. They changed from 99-2000 apparently and AutoZone and Oriellys just kept selling the old one. Sealed in the box, with the right part number just a hair difference in the rotor. Only on the cheaper blanks though. If you bought the upgrades they were right.
                      Whos your Daddy?

Kevin, you are a champion. Thanks for figuring that out. Matching caliper is in hand and was an easy swap. Thanks again!

Glad to hear it worked out. Now get that thing together.

Hell yeah, that's the plan. Driveshaft shortening is next.
