  • Locating a vehicle owner

We have had an old explorer in front of one of our job sites for quite some time. No plates, worn the fuck out, looks abandoned. Is there any way to locate the current registered owner from the VIN or registration sticker? County Sheriff doesn't seem too eager to help

Have you tried the DPS? In some areas they are contracted for law enforcement. The police, even a constable are your best bet. If it looks abandoned it should be towed away and the impound yard will try to reach the owner of record before putting a lien on it.

I'd mention that it appears to have been stolen, they might actually care then.

Is there a suspicious looking package that smells of fertilizer in it? Call the cops!

Texas law enforcement agencies will seize abandoned motor vehicles and try to contact their last owners or lien holders to let them know it has the vehicle. If an agency can't locate them within a specific time, the car will go up for auction and can be purchased free from liens or title.

bcoop got me the info I was looking for. Thanks.

Local Sheriff came out today (Kaufman county) and said that the car is legally parked, registration is valid, and that there was nothing that they could do about it. Didn't offer to contact the registered owner at all. There are no plates on the vehicle, so it was obviously dumped because it is a shit box and probably wouldn't crank.

The registration expires the end of this month. So, they said to call them back on Aug 1st.

                    Thoughts?

It is a residential subdivision and it is parked on the street.
