  • Where to store gun with a kid in the house?

In a safe is the obvious answer, but what about the one or two that I want to have quick access to in the event of a home-invasion? Are the bio safes any good/reliable? What brand(s) have you had good experiences with?

Up high in the closet will work for a while, but in a blink he'll be climbing and able to get to anywhere in the house potentially.

Check out http://www.gunvault.com/. I have a couple in different areas of the house and I've had no issues. Though they are not the biometric locks, they are the finger push pads.

I'm curious about this as well. Right now I use a safe because the probability of an accident is higher than a break in with the threat of personal harm. But I want a quick access option.

Magnus, I am your father. You need to ask your mother about a man named Calvin Klein.

Mine is either on me or on top of my book shelf. But my son has been educated on firearms since about 3 years old. Guns have never been some secret mystical hidden device to him. He know what they are, what they do, how some of them work, and knows to leave them alone unless he asks and I am with him to teach him something.

I also have a small electronic pistol safe that I have not installed anywhere since I moved. Used it at the last house and it was worked well.

It’s not your son you have to worry about, but your sons friends.

My son will be educated about firearms as soon as he's old enough, but I'm not willing to bet his life on trusting that he'll be willing/able to leave them alone.

what about he furniture that hides them in lamps and tables and such that require an RFID card in your wallet to open it? see them pop up on ads on facebook feed all the time. Can even hid the RFID on the bottom of something on the shelf, slide it over a spot and the bottom of the shelf drops and the gun becomes available. I'll see if I can find the link. tactical walls or something...

                  yeah, www.tacticalwalls.com

This. Thinking training is enough is pure hubris. Complacency kills and I almost shot my own leg once as a teenager when handling a firearm that "wasn't loaded". There is no amount of training in the world that overcomes complacency. I've lived my life around guns and have always known better. It's never an intentional screw up in these stories...it's an accident.

If the worst ever happens...just imagine how that would go down knowing that it simply takes a lockbox.

It's just like the friendly dog that can be trusted with any baby...

Education and a firm hand. Kids killing themselves with guns wasn't an epidemic when kids were around them and parents actually gave enough of a shit to parent. This wasn't a problem in the '40's and '50's, or in the 1700's or 1800's. Like mass shootings, this is a more recent problem. Not saying it is wise to leave loaded guns stashed around with unsupervised kids, but all my shit stays in the safe save for my carry/nightstand gun. That stays on top of the book case and kid gets talked to several times a week about guns and goes shooting and hunting with me. As for the friends comment I agree, however it is rare I let him invite friends over and then the gun is on my person or locked away.

Back to the OP question. Get a biometric handgun safe for less than $200 (I think), bolt it down, and use it. The technology is here and works so if access is a concern then use it.

Same here. They have a biometric version that is faster and not that much more expensive.

He's 2? Well in future years, how about just put a lock on the bedroom door and deny access to him and his little friends. You could do one of them fancy fingerprint locks for you and the wife, for convenience. That way the only way he could go in there is if you're in there.
