  • Kid needs surgery... this will be a fun night.

So around 6pm my kids were out riding skateboards while I was preparing dinner... pretty standard night. The wife got a call from my oldest (12) and said "ok, where are you? I'll be right there". She drives down the road to get him, brings him back in the back seat with his arm looking like a limp noodle between the elbow and the wrist. Given my EXTENSIVE medical background (ALL on the patient side), I immediately knew it was broke as fuck...

I offered to grab my shit and drive to the hospital but the wife said "no, I've been more exposed to this bullshit than you" since she runs a surgery center so she took him. Now I've had more than my fair share of broken bones, but never needed surgery on any of them. I didn't expect he'd need it for this, especially after one of his football team mates last year had a very similar break with just a cast... BUT this one appears to have broken the skin from the inside out.

At this point, even if I stay home and they stay there, when they come home it'll be the same as if I went so I'm not worried about Covid-19 I'm worried about my kid. The odds (IMO) are the same no matter which of us is there with him unless we stay in isolation for like 2 weeks after which isn't an option, so I'll relieve the wife tonight and make sure the kiddo is good this evening...

Looks like it's gonna be a long night boys!

tell him to quit riding skateboards, and start riding motorcycles...much safer!

lol, one of my last wrecks, mom offered to buy me a brand new car if i'd quit riding.

      Hope all goes well.

I have had a ton of broken bones in my life. It is to the point that I can read x-rays when the nurse/tech brings them to the room before the specialist views them. I somehow avoided surgery and pins until I was 30's, and that came from a truly innocent/accidental fall. It happens. My kids have had several injuries the last 3 years requiring casts, surgery, etc. Just be supportive and encouraging for them to continue being kids/young men. Success in life isn't for the faint of heart. Prayers for you guys.

I've been lucky enough that the only thing I have ever broken was a toe. That hurt like hell, I can't imagine what your kids going through right now. Best of luck.

Poor boy, luckily he’s young and will be fine in a matter of weeks! My son broke his leg 4 years ago (tibia and fibula) in a baseball game and had to have surgery and within 90 days it was like it never happened

That sucks. Your kid getting hurt bad is always a stellar experience as a parent.

                    Be careful up there.

I can't think of many parents that haven't been to the ER with their kids. All of my injury trips to the ER have been with my middle boy. Stitches in the face from a dog scratch, a ripped ear from a nasty fall, and so on. I had to take my 3 YO in the middle o the night a few months ago when he woke up struggling very hard to take every breath, both in and out. That one was the scariest yet.

My wife and I raised six kids. We used to joke about the local hospital having the "Swain" Wing from all our visits over the years. Just give him a hug and tell him that's another life experience to grow from.

                          Thanks guys, update time.

Ended up trading places with the wife around midnight and stayed at hospital with him. Went into surgery around 10am expecting to get pins along bone from wrist to elbow as well as cleaning the bones to try to prevent infection. Dr. Said once he got in there he was comfortable with how they got set so no rods, just a cast from hand to bicep and 3 stiches. Surgery took less than an hour and we are just waiting to get discharged in the next 30ish minutes. He’s sitting up and playing fort nite now, he’s a champ, no complaining or fear.
