Back in early 2000's, me and a buddy were in a group lotto at work, and me and him got tired of spending 25 a month, so we dropped out. 2 weeks later the group won. I think it was somewhere between 12-16 mill. It was a pretty big group. Each of them after tax got 200k take home.
        Damn that sucks.

Most people I talk to have nothing but good things to say about you, but you sure come across as a condescending prick. Do you have an inferiority complex you've attempted to overcome through overachievement? Or were you fondled as a child?

You and slow99 should date. You both have passive aggressiveness down pat.

            Yea,

fucking sucked, but guess it wasn't meant to be. I remember I was coming back from out of town and he called me up and told me that. I went silent for few seconds..ha. We both said fuck it...hahaha

I just searched for it and found it....was back in June 2000. After taxes, was 10.6 mill. I was little off..ha
I remember why I didn't want to join big groups. There was a guy who held it up for almost 2 months because he was trying to find a way to not pay taxes. They finally claimed it in Aug of that year. Group was about to go to court for it, but he decided to just take it.

If you won $4 million you would have about $1.6M in a lump sum if you outright claimed it without any shenanigans like creating a trust or some other fuckery. I do know who I would call if I won, a genius attorney that deals with corporate structures and avoiding taxes all day every day.

But yes, $1.6M is more than enough to piss away but not really enough to live the high life on.

My stepdad used to hang drinking coffee every day at the AMPM in Garland, got in pretty good with the lotto guy. He bought an entire roll of scratch offs straight off the truck. Didn't even break even....

Then my father in law drops $50 a day on scratch offs. He will hit quite a bit, never more than $100. On some scratch offs there is an additional drawing, you fill out the back of the ticket and send it in. He does pretty well on those. Autographed NFL jerseys, basketballs, footballs. Won some world of poker sets, all kinds of just random shit....

I got a friend that would buy the $50 scratch tickets all the time, and lose. I kept trying to talk him out of it, and I finally managed to. I gathered up the ones I could find in his truck, and added up the loss just from those. It was enough to convince him to quit doing it.

Who was that guy we had around here, that put some prank ones in the christmas gag party... then some poor relatives got them and he felt all bad because the wife was like "Look god will take care of us!!" ... ROFL!!

                    I might buy 3-4 scratch-offs a year. Best I’ve ever done is $50, I think.

When the drawing gets really big, like once every 2-3 years or so, I’ll lose my mind and drop a couple hundred bucks on quick picks. I never win more than a few bucks on that shit.

I just do it for the thrill. I don’t expect to win, and don’t do it often. It’s fun to think about the “what if”, though.

The problem with scratch offs is the fine print. Sure, there are ones that have massive prizes, but retailers can continue to sell the scratchoffs....get this...after all the large prizes have been claimed.

And sometimes there are very small numbers of large prizes, maybe 3 to 5 total for the large amounts.

I agree with whoever stated "For $1 its a cheap thrill". Buy it on a Friday, perk your mood, enjoy your family that weekend, when Monday rolls around you can have a glimmer of hope of taking a dump on your desk "like a boss" and then leaving.

                      Otherwise, it's a standard monday.

I don't think you're going to get to take a dump on your boss's desk from buying the $1 tickets. Most of those have some very small grand prize like $10k or $20k.

I know because I manage my wife's gambling tendencies. Every 3 or 4 months we have to go to the casino in oklahoma, and she buys those scratch tickets from time to time. I'm too damn practical to gamble. Lost the first time: Never wanted to play ever again.

Casino gambling is different for me. I'm good enough at blackjack (standard strategies and card counting) to play for hours on a couple hundred bucks on a $10 table. Drink beer, socialize, and have some fun with a chance of coming out ahead. I'll never get rich off from it, but I can damned sure have fun.

Last cruise I went on, I played from 10PM to 3AM on $100, wound up $200 ahead, which paid for all of my alcohol for the trip.

I almost never play, but right after it started here, I stopped and bought 5) $1 scratch offs on the way to work one day. I think they were called "Lucky 7s", or something like that. The payoffs were $777, $77, $7, $1, or free ticket.
Of the five I bought, I hit $77, $7, $7, $1, and a free ticket. With the free ticket, I got another $1.
