  • How Much energy do you use?

Can you provide your energy usage verses square footage?

Additional info is helpful if you would like to provide it, such as if you have a pool, two stories, keep the a/c at 68 degrees etc.

According to Oncor, here is what our usage has been the past year. We have a pool. We turn off the ac/heat during the day when no one is here. Our home is 1900 square feet and two stories.

Wife is a teacher and kids, so our summer usage is high.. This is ~2k sq ft, single story ranch built in 1961 with shit insulation and single pane windows but a high efficiency (18 seer) AC system. No pool or other big use items. Gas furnace, water heater but electric dryer, range and oven. AC stays set at 71* 24/7 when it's warm (3 dogs, 2 cats):

We averaged 950 k/hr last year. 2,400 sq/ft built last year. Spray foam insulated. We keep the thermostat between 68 and 72 year round. No kids.

          A 1900 sqft 2 story?

That usage seems really high. Have you inspected the hvac system?

Yes. All bedrooms are upstairs. Maybe 1950 but not a big home.

I haven’t inspected it but it works well and is newer. I don’t know where to start to figure this out.

We live in a 1 year old house and the upstairs was always 80+ degrees when the heater was on and it was cold outside. We got the system balanced and they said it was just the heat rising....you know that BS. I went through the system and found that the pressure regulating damper adjuster was 90 degrees rotated from where it should be. Which meant it was holding itself completely open....and the damper just happened to dump the air upstairs so it was heating the upstairs anytime the heat was on. It would hit over 90 on occasion.

Finally I went rooting around myself, realized the CPRD was installed wrong and fixed it. The heat works perfect now and we save a lot of energy that was just being dumped where we didn't need it.

In the last 4 months my highest usage was 500 kWh. Last month it was like 300 kWh.
In the summer I might have used a hair over 2000 kWh in August.

1700 sqft, gas heat, built in 1956. Not the most efficient but I've been pretty happy with usage

Also, where do you get your energy in this world?

It doesn't seem like it's working well if you used 4500 kWh in Jan! I didn't even notice that. I guess electric heat? That's crazy usage if you have your heat off during the day. Are you heating your pool or a hot tub or something?

And that's crazy low! Do you live by yourself? Never home?

You might call oncor and see if there are energy efficiency programs available. Maybe start with a blow test of the house.
