“Never out of the top 10”?

How could u not be consistently #1?

I was shooting against men twice my age who had a lot more experience. Top ten was my lowest score; I finished 2nd many times and got 1st once I think when the black guy didn't show up.

Edit: I also made a point of shooting duty ammo vs the under-powered target stuff everyone else shot. My preferred factory .38spl load has always been the Dallas/FBI 158gr LSWCHP +p from whoever is loading it to those specs when I am on an ammo buying binge. When I load my own version of this load I use gas checks that I add myself to my own EK style castings or buy factory bullets made that way and crank up the speed.

^^^^ I guess my question should have been how much improvement do they offer? If you took the classes top scoring shooter and gave them a stock G21 or a CZ97 how much would it drop their score?

PPC used to be super competitive in the DFW area and one year I shot a stock S&W J-frame or a model 64 4"just to prove a point and I was never out of the top 10 finishers. The top guy was always an older black guy who was a member of the FWPD and he shot his duty carry 1911.

If you are being specific about those two particular guns and being in .45 then I'd have to say the ONLY division those would be competitive in would be Limited 10. If you tried to use either of those in Open division you'd get absolutely stomped as they are in an undesirable caliber based on the fact you can't get many rounds in a magazine, and they don't have a red dot or comp. I get 29 + 1 in my big stick for my open gun and 23+1 in my regular sized ones of 38 super comp. For a .45 you'd be lucky to get 20 so you'd have to reload a lot more often than I do.

Now let's say you tried those two guns in Production division you wouldn't be at too big of a disadvantage except for recoil while you'd be shooting major power factor (unless you download) while productions is scored minor no matter what so 9mm dominates that division.

In Limited division you'd be at a disadvantage on mag capacity. Minimum caliber to make major PF is .40 and mags are limited to the over all length of 141.25mm so most people get 20-21 rounds in the mag with .40 but .45 would be well under 20 rounds.

For Open division, Limited, and Limited 10 the 2011 platform dominates all other types. There are a lot of people who shoot glocks and what not, I have shot a glock 22 and 35 A LOT over the years and did ok but out of a field of say 65 people on average I was usually around 30th. Now I shoot a SVI Open gun and I'm usually 5-8th overall.

I understand using a gun that you picked up at Academy not being competitive. My question is by how much? 30 seconds longer and a 50 percent lower score?

When I shot PPC I found that trying my hand with a stock duty style gun to be a worthwhile learning experience. Have you ever considered trying what you do with a stock gun of any sort just to see what you can do? Would you go from number 1 to dead last?

When I shot limited division with a glock I was slower and less accurate than when I shot limited division with a STI 2011 using the same ammo (.40 custom loads). I'd say the equipment going from the glock to the STI was likely worth about a 10-15% improvement. Now that I'm shooting open there is really no gun from Academy that can be at all competitive in that division. The production division has very few modifications you can do to the gun and yes you can just pick one up at academy and go... Unless your name is Ben Stoger you won't win a local match shooting production and even then it's very unlikely. You might win your division, but pretty much every match the overall winner is shooting open.
