Also, for anyone passing through and may be looking to get started, I may be looking to sell my Specialized Allez. Just had it serviced and a new front derailure installed. I put ~300 miles on it, though I am unsure of how many were on it when I bought it. It is a 52.

Some days, it feels as though I will never ride consistently past 20 miles. I had to work this morning which meant a short ride. Headed out to the group meeting spot and only 1 other rider, one of the fastest guys in the group. Ego check? Of course. Pushed too hard on the first few miles which made the end pretty tough at points.

Currently, I can ride 15-20 miles with zero issues. Hopefully with a reset over the winter, some weight training to build leg strength, and hopefully developing a good training plan, next season I will see better gains and improvements.

Consistency is the key. Now that pneumonia is finally over for me, I can start working out in earnest again. You are just restarting. If you ride 20 miles a day a few times a week, you will be able to ride 30+ soon enough. Honestly if you do that and on the weekends stretch it out you will learn to ride 50 plus easily.

The real key is controlling your pace. Like you admit you fried yourself in a few miles on this ride. Anyone can do that. The longer you ride the slower your pace is going to be. If you ride at 60% effort then you can ride for hours on end. You just need to practice and learn appropriate pacing.

That is definitely my #1 problem. I haven't learned to control my pace.

Well my first organized ride of the year is tomorrow morning. Only 21 miles. I am riding with my Dad, who had a heart attack earlier this year. It is the same ride that we rode 2 years ago, same exact route, we averaged 14.1 with a stiff head wind on the return. This year it looks much better.

I have only rode 18miles this week, on Tuesday. I went down about 5 miles from home. On a narrow divided 2 lane, I moved over into the grass for a truck that had no intention of giving me any room or slowing down. As I went to get back onto the road, my front tire hung and it threw me to the ground. A little bruising in my shoulder and some road rash. Thankfully, my melon hit last and barely made contact with the pavement. I have laid off since to keep from hurting my shoulder and to make sure I can ride tomorrow.

If anyone is interested, you can still register for the Cotton Patch. Distances from 21 to 63 miles

Man, I promise you can grind out way more than 20 miles. My first organized ride of the year way in May. I paid for the 30M. I felt like such a pussy that day for only doing the 30, I rode the 45M course with ease. And that was with zero training. I hadnt been on a bike since August.
Then I booked a trip to California and had a two day 110 mile ride. I hadnt rode since May. Zero training. Not even a stationary bike. Sure my overall time is semi-slow, but I had a backpack too, wearing camo shorts and a button up. I was far from kitted up.
                  Maybe this will motivate you.
                  Just continue peddling man.

I am doing the 21 mile ride with my Dad. That is the only reason I am not riding longer. I am registered for the Wish 100 im Mckinney which is 41 miles, it will be a bit of a test with the elevation. My longest ride to date was 40.6 and I STRUGGLED the last 4 miles or so.

My total ride in tje morning will end up about 26. I plan to ride from my house and meet my dad at the start point, which will serve as my warm up and add 5-6 miles.

                    • Had a great ride this morning. Telemetry wise, It was ok, but I knew that going in, trying to keep a pace that kept my dad and me close together. This was the exact route we rode 2 years ago. We finished 2 minutes faster and increased or avg speed from 14.1 to 15.2. We crossed the start and finish line together. I am 3 years post back surgery and he is 5 months post heart attack. He is the primary reason I took up the sport.

                      After the ride

                      • Well, my season ended early. I am 25-50 miles short of my 500 mile goal I wanted to reach by Sept. 12th. I managed one 10 mile ride after I rode the cotton patch with my dad. We were both rwgistered to ride tomorrow, but I won't make it.

On Wednesday morning I suffered a set back. I am calling it a back spasm. My specialist was confident that it was a muscle issue, not a spinal issue. I have been on anti inflamatories, muscle relaxers, and oral steroids since Wednesday. I was looking forward to riding with my dad again, reaching my goal, and going into the off season with momentum. Instead I am, once again, nursing a back injury and will spend the next few weeks on the mend. My wedding is coming up, Nov. 14th, so most all of my free time between now and then will be focused on that.

So, here is to a productive off season in the gym, building my core strength, improving my overall fitness, and starting fresh next season, early and with more power!

                        • That sucks to hear man. I just about cut off my index finger so I haven't been able to do anything for a month. No running, biking, and the only gym activity I can handle is legs.

Are you still looking to unload that bike?

I'm getting back into riding finally also. Being back up here with other guys I know who ride, being right next to the Trinity Trails, etc are all motivating me again. Knowing we were going to be downtown I even managed to talk my wife into riding recently... with one stipulation: "I'd love to ride around town with you... but I don't want to worry about shifting gears."

So I sold my Trek Fuel EX6 (haven't been on a MTB ride in like 3 yrs anyway) and got us a pair of single speeds. NON fixie. I'm so far removed from the days of riding BMX bikes I forgot how fun a single speed can be.

I still have that trainer also. Sometime in the next few weeks maybe we can meet up so you can take it.

NICE! this past Saturday big adam hopped the dart train outta carrollton and did a brewery tour with the folks from ride friendly deep ellum on our rigid single speeds. while im sure the beer and the food helped, it was one of the best Saturdays I can remember in a great while!

                              god bless.
