Jerry isn't dumb, he's holding Garrett hostage til the 14th, when his contract is up, keeping him from interviewing right now anywhere else. While Jerry secures his replacement.

What a weird turn of events. I think the breaking of the story about Garrett basically begging for his job forced Jerry's hand. I'm sure he wanted to just quietly let his contract expire out of respect for him, but once that story broke, he had to do something to save Garrett the embarassment whether the story was true or not.
