  • Is my cpu fan dead?

So my laptop will run fine for a while but if I play music or a movie, porn or otherwise it'll start to run like shit for about a minute then basically not at all. If I shut it off for a while it'll run fine again. The fan, if running at all, isn't as loud or blowing much air out of the vents. Pretty sure this is the problem...just want some confirmation.

Can't really tell unless you open it up and look at it or download a program that lets you monitor that which I don't know off the top of my head. Have you dusted out your laptop in a while? I have to every few weeks on my gaming lap.

Could be that or your GPU overheating.

Install Coretemp and see what it shows.

Installed it and let it play a video for about 15 minutes. Hovered around 52 degrees C. Then as soon as I opened up my web browser (chrome) it shot up to 60 degrees and I'm not hearing the fan kick in at all.

It might be helpful to know kind of laptop this is. I've replaced dead fans on a bunch of laptops with a large percentage of them being HP and Compaq.

If its anything like the previous ones I've done...they are a bit of a pain to take apart just because of how the case is assembled (it will require the laptop to be 100% completely disassembled). You will need new heat sink grease because the fan probably cannot be removed until the heat sink is separated from the board. The fans are CHEAP but get one from a reputable source...there are a lot of cheap copies floating around on Ebay and other sites that are pure JUNK.

Well, I replaced the fan today. Ran the computer with wifi on, HD video playing, and various other programs going and it was pretty smooth. Great thing about the fan replacement being a dick is now I know how to pretty much completely disassemble my laptop and put it back together and it actually work.
