Of course hind sight is always 20/20 but maybe having a valve with a big quarter turn handle in place of a typical needle valve is not the greatest of ideas.

For one, it looks like there was a thin nipple (snicker) to cross over to that quarter turn valve that is being torqued each time that handle is turned. The large moment arm of that big handle just makes it worse. If NOS (guessing based on a blue bottle) sells it like this, it might be time to call lawyer as that seems like a bad design.
