The jetliner that got shot down deliberately departed regular civilian flight paths and then approached the u.s. ship on what appeared to be an attack run. It is suspected that the pilots were doing so under orders from the government in an attempt to be intimidating. The ship only fired after repeated attempts to contact the pilots failed.
    "mistook" = error

    Since this was pre-9/11 civilian airliners were not yet generally considered to be potential weapons.

      I could see this being the nail in Trump’s coffin. The narrative will be that had he not ordered the drone strike, Iran would not have been retaliating.

      This Iran thing was already looking bad for Trump.

        If you believe the official story one of our patrol helicopters was attacked so the cruiser it was based from was engaging Iranian flagged vessels and their Aegis system detected a jet diving at high speed right at them that originated from a field where F-14s were based.

        That field was also a commercial airport. The plane was climbing, the pilots were communicating in English and had their transponder on. So the ship was actively shooting at Iranian targets and was in Omani water when their Aegis system malfunctioned and didn't correctly identify the plane or it's vector. They made a judgement call under fire and decided to take the jet down.

          The plane was shot down shortly after the missiles were fired at the base and the Iranians were expecting quick retaliation. I don't know much about those missiles. Could they have an areial proximity sensor that automatically went off and took out the plane?

            Anyone not suffering from TDS knows better, but that's definitely already a common sentiment.

              Critical thinking will bring out the truth. Let this play out. How many do we have dead so far? A contractor a general and 176 in a 737. And the finger pointing begins!!!

                  Geraldo just made a good point, why the hell did the traffic controllers and the pilot decide to take off immediately following a missile strike? We'll ground stop an entire airport if there is a security breach at a check point, those idiots were operating like normal with SAM sites on both sides on high alert and probably even while ballistic missiles were still in the air.

                    Have you been around any Ukrainians? Or Russians or anyother Eastern Europeans for that matter? Most of them could give a fuck about a bunch of missiles being fired around them or anything else that would scare the shit out of a typical American.

                        • So what sets the SAM is it automatic or must it be fired by an operator? One would think it’s setup to probably not to shoot down 737 s leaving the airport but it’s Middle East. These people are smart enough to build a Nuke but can’t figure out how not to accidentally shoot down civilian aircraft?

                              There are lots of different systems, we know it was missiles though so yeah someone gave a fire order. Now if it was their most modern and effective system which is what you'd be using if you are expecting a squadron of F-35s it would have been an S-300 and if it's like the ones in Syria they could have had Russians running it.
