I had an engine delivered from Tennessee to Fort Worth for roughly the same price, ~$425.

Can they cram it into one of those US Postal Service flat rate boxes?

              Sounds like a decent rate.

Is it a new motor? If it has fluid in it could be treated as hazmat and will be more expensive to move.

Sounds right with a few exceptions. Will a lift gate be needed on either end? Will it be a residential pickup/delivery? Make sure you discuss insurance options, where the engine will be stored. What kind of crating will the shipper use? Is it sufficient? (Is this a business who knows what they are doing or a regular Joe who has an engine you want?)

Alternatives: You may want to see about finding someone who makes the trip regularly. Some car delivery folks may give you a better rate as it should just fit in their truck. Also, may be able to get a trucker w/ space to fill. And lastly, IF the engine isn't too big, you MIGHT get lucky enough to get Greyhound bus to bring it down for you. They have shipping options.

                        Good luck!

My Dart motor long block with aluminum heads was shipped from Washington and cost me $125 for truck freight but I had to pick it up over off of Loop 12.
