  • Chickens or Ducks?

Finally moving into a house again in a few weeks and the back yard is HUGE.

The city is "farm and poultry friendly" so I was thinking about getting some chickens or ducks.

If at the very least it will give me a reason to do and build shit outside as well as piss off the neighbors.

Anyone have any experience in this or know if I should go with chickens or ducks?

Unless you have a pond I would say chickens. You can have fresh eggs for breakfast.

If you just want to piss off the neighbors get peacocks. Geese are also pretty annoying.

Chickens.. if you don't want to piss off the neighbors, don't get a rooster and build the coop as far from them as possible.

Ya bad idea to move in somewhere and start pissing people off

I'd say chickens, no rooster. With some kind of big pen around them so the birds can't get em and help keep predators out.

Yea, was thinking about all hens...

Thinking about building a coop and a nice run back there.

Wife gets the house, I get the garage and the yard... lol

That's never how it works. Once she smells the fun and enjoyment in the air, she's going to want the garage and yard too.

Exactly. Depending on what you're doing (livestock, horticulture, etc) you'll need 5-10 acres to even be considered for the exemption Some counties (e.g. Montgomery) have a hard limit of 10 acres no matter what you're doing.
And then there's still a waiting period. You have to document all ag expenses and keep every receipt for anything ag related on the property for 5 yrs before you'll actually be ag exempt on taxes.
And, of course, you'd actually have to go through the effort of selling some of those eggs also.

It's big, but its not that big....

Anyway, I've already downloaded a few chicken coop plans...
