He's under team control until 2019. It's a pretty heft contract at $23 million per season but considering the deals Scherzer and Kershaw signed he's a bargain. Your alternatives would be to go after Price, Cueto, Zimmerman or Greinke as free agents if they make it that long.

Price and Greinke are 90% the player Kershaw is and are probably on the same level as Scherzer. They'll get one of those stupid $200 million contracts from someone. Zimmerman is likely to resign with Washington so I won't consider him. So would you want to spend $23 million on Johnny Cueto over 5+ years or try and get Hamels with Philly eating some of his contract?

      • The Dodgers just traded for Latos so that's one more team out of the Hamels talks. It's pretty much the Rangers, Cubs and Giants at this point. The Stroh's are still trying but he has them listed in his no trade clause.

        • Why does Hamel hate the Astros?

          • Because they'd lost 400 games in the 4 seasons before he signed that contract.

              • So can Hamel's even make the Rangers competitive? Can he start every 3 days? Probably not.....

At this point, the owners need to smarten up and have Daniel's update his resume. The GM we should have gone after is in LA fixing the Dodgers, and Nolan Ryan is in Houston "doing nothing" but they sure seem a lot better with him around.

They wouldn't need him every 3 days if half their rotation were actually healthy.

This team has a lot of problems but I don't know that they can all be placed on the GM's shoulders.

So who is responsible the tooth fairey? It's the GM. He drove everyone around him off so he could do it his way.... well his way is clearly driving a World Series team into the ground.

                    • Alfaro, Eickhoff, and Nick Williams in the deal, Rangers get cash. Apparently will be at least one more player, perhaps two, but there's talk of Rangers getting a player in return as well. Mazara, Jackson, and Gallo not going anywhere.

Going to suck losing a top tier catching prospect, but there's been a lot of grumbling about Alfaro's progress this year behind the plate. Williams is an exciting player but Rangers' farm is deep at OF in front and behind him. Eickhoff has a chance to be the biggest loss in the trade, he could be good.

Hamels (no apostrophe, he's not in a constant state of property ownership) move is not about this year, it's about the next three years. JD has played his cards incredibly well on this deal, and it looks like he's going to wind up getting Hamels for a very fair price.

Ryan showing up in Houston is a perfect example of non-causal correlation. Those wheels were in motion well before he showed up there.

                        • Looks like it will just be one player on top of the three specified, and Rangers getting reliever Jake Diekman. I'm not familiar with Diekman, but those more in the know seem very excited to get him in this deal.

A fucking coup for JD here, Anthony.

                          • Jake Thompson and Alec Asher also in the deal, along with the completel unexpected Matt Harrison. Thompson by far the biggest loss in this trade, Asher a lot of upside but way far off, Harrison inclusion a complete enigma.

No longer a coup, going to have to wait this one out a few years to determine the tally.

                            • Could have guess, but Adam Morris at lonestarball confirms the Harrison part:

Harrison going to Philly means adding Hamels increases 2016 payroll by just $10M, w/o factoring in any cash Philly kicks in.
                              That's huge.

                              • I'm cool with it since it's not a one year deal. It was getting old watching these aces come and go.

So the big question, is he a replacement for yu?
