  • The rebuild of Nitrous Outlet's 275 Drag Radial Car

Before I get into this I want to make sure I give Credit to Charles our General Manager for all the hard work he has put into this car..

I am starting this thread to share the changes we are making to the Nitrous Outlet shop car.

    To recap the past.

Long story short the car is a Hugger Orange Z28 on a set of 275 drag radials.

The car was painted Hugger Orange by Sykora Truck.

Aluminum block LS2 402 engine, Texas Speed Texas giant cam shaft, Trick Flow 235 Heads from Brian Tooley, Super Victor intake with Accufab 4150 throttle body. Installed in the car by Sunshine Performance in Killeen, TX.

Transmission is a Stock case power glide with 1.80 First gear.

9 inch rear end with 390 gears.

Suspension consist of PA Racing A arms, PA Racing K member, Mad Man Torque Arm, Mad Man Travel limiters, Wolf Rear sway bar, Strange double adjustable front shocks, Strange single adjustable shocks on the rear and race brakes all the way around.

The Nitrous system consist of A Nitrous Outlet spray bar being feed by a .125 Nitrous solenoid and a .187 Fuel solenoid. Dual 10 lb bottles in our nice billet bottle bracket.

Stock PCM Using the EFI Live Custom Operating system, set up and programmed by lorenze at LSX Tuning.

    Lingenfelter two step.

The car started off as a T-top car that we converted to a hard top.

    Before.

    Took the roof skin off.

    Weight reduction.

    The donor car.

We removed the roof skin and framing that goes across the top of the door jam.

    Just a little more fun.

The new roof skin painted by J&M Collision.

The framing welded in by J&M Collision.

And now we have a hard top thanks to J&M Collision.

While the car was at J&M they did some fibe glass work on the VFN hood and repainted the front clip. Because I took out a quarter mile markker at little river while testing.

After the Car came back from J&M Collision we finished up the car and tried several times to get the car down the track on drag radials.

After several failed attempts we called Madman for help and he provided us with to do list to properly set the car up so that it would hook and get down the track.

After doing all the changes he told us to do the car it 1.21 60 footed off the trailer. 1st attempt the car stood up, I early shifted and got out of it. For the next pass we tightened up the front shocks and the car picked the front wheel up about 2 inches, carried it out and set it down. On this pass air got under the VFN rear hatch ripping it off the car. We ran the car the rest of the day with no rear hatch. The car went a 1.21 60 foot, 5.40 1/8 mile and 8.65 1/4 on the rev limiter. After 3 or 4 back to back passes we loaded up the car and headed home. This was done on a very conservative tuned 200 shot.

    Watch Pass

After getting the car back to the shop we decided to remove the switch panel from inside the console to an area easier to reach while staging the car. As we started to rewire the car we decided to make some other changes to the car. And this is where it all wet to crap.lol

1st we decided to rewire the entire car

2nd we decided since the car was already gutted to make some changes to the cage.

3rd we decided since we are this far we mind as well bring the cage through the firewall.

4th we decided that mind as well make the front clip removable.

5th we decided to cut the cowl completely out of the car and move the windshield back.

6th we decided since we are doing all this we mind as well move the fuel cell to the front nose.

    Wiring mess.

This is how we added weight to the front of the car when we scaled it.

    Pulling the car apart.

      Cutting it up.

      Moved the windshield cowl back.

The start of finishing out the firewall.

      Front bars.

      Installed Madman Motor Plates.

Machined the motor plates for the alternator and our new vacuum pump.

We ended up replacing all the bars in the car except for the main hoop and one door bar. I did not take any pictures.

We also replaced the rear floor in the car.

We purchased a fuel cell to put in the front nose.

So a few nights a week and weekends we were working on making all these changes. Then the shop got so busy and the car got pushed aside. We started working nights and weekends on customers projects instead. We kept trying to find the time to work on the car and we never could. (Business first)

When we started this project we were wanting to race the Texas 275 and the LSX Real street class. At this time we knew our car could compete in the front of the classes we were interested in. Well while our car was collecting dust in the back of the shop the 275 classes got much faster and we soon realized that low 5's in the 1/8 mile were not going to cut it any longer. This meant that all the cage changes we made were no longer enough for how fast we needed to go.

This created a hand full of new problems for us. We knew we needed to go 25.3 and we did not have the time to do it ourselves. We also knew we did not want to take the money that is needed to help business growth and put it into a car. I have seen a lot of good companies go under doing that. So we pushed the car aside and let it sit.

As race season came back around we started getting the fever again. We started trying to figure out what we wanted to do with the car.

Knowing so many people that are doing chassis work actually became a hold back. I was so torn about what to do with the car because I was worried that if I took the car some where I would upset the ones that I did not take it to.

After fighting this internal battle for a good while I decided to just get it done and hopefully everyone would understand. By this point all those buddies that owned chassis shops were so busy they simply could not get to us anytime soon. This meant we were going to sit another year out.

Then a door opened. Clint at True Street Motor Sports informed me that he had hired a fabricator by the name of Josh and that he was really good. Clint was adding chassis work to his operation and our shop car would be a great opportunity to show what they are capable of doing.

So I started asking questions, asking for pictures of prior work that Josh had done, and asking people that knew of Josh for references. After a lot of thought Clint and I made a deal.

Charles and I loaded the car up and hauled it to True Street Motor Sports in Mckenny Texas.

True Street will be converting the car to 25.3 and finishing up all the major fabrication work Charles and I started. They have estimated to have the car finished in 4 to 5 weeks. They will be providing me with updates and pictures so that I can share the progress.

When Clint and I set this all up he told me he could start on the car in 10 days.

I decided to go ahead and take him the car that weekend because it was the only open weekend I had. On 4-20-13 I dropped the car off at True Street Motorsports.

Early the following week he sent me this teaser picture.

Then I got these two picture's.. Wait a minute, It hasn't been 10 days and they are already started. WooHooo!

They welded up the holes from where the old hatch pinned on.

They welded up all the holes in the floor.

They cut out the cross bar.

          Lowered the cross

          Starting to get interesting.
