Why are ATI cards sold out?

Is there some big shortage or is this normal or ATI? I have been out of the PC hardware world for a while and am considering building a new PC soon and noticed the 6970's are all sold out and the 6990's are MIA although I know I saw some for sale a while back. Whats the deal?

not to mention with using less power too, to the op you'll be lucky to find those cards and if you do be quick with the purchase as fellow bitcoin miners will more than likely scoop them up.

Update: Talk about uncanny timing. We published this article this afternoon, and about 3 hours later stock suddenly appeared back on Newegg and other sites. We have been watching stock for the past few weeks, and talked to the manufacturers, and there was nothing. Keep watch and see how long this lasts!
