When I replaced the outer handles on my '85, they used large rivets to hold them on.

Outer door handle on my 90 is 1/4" x 2" rivets. Good luck finding the rivet tool that big. Or tamper proof bolts with nylon lock nuts 1/4" x 3/4" long.
