  • Laptop brands

I've been shopping laptops lately and I want to make sure I'm not missing any brands I should be checking out.

Apple -- probably not shelling out the extra cash just to buy apple
HP -- hear the customer support sucks
Dell -- hear the build quaility sucks
Lenovo -- don't seem to offer much for customization
Toshiba -- i have no clue about customer support or build quality
    Sony -- seem expensive
Gateway -- seem behind in what they offer.

    Any other brands I'm missing?

Didn't even think about Samsung, actually had no clue they made laptops. Are they anything decent? And I totally forgot about ASUS

I wouldn't mind getting an ASUS. I use an HP Mini at work, other than the annoying HP software, it's not bad at all. The battery even lasts all day, I charge at home overnight, bring it to work, leave the charger at home, and don't have to worry about leaving it at work on accident.

Just looking over their site and ASUS has way more laptops than I expected.

I'm in the market as well, hoping to find a nice deal for black friday on one. I'm considering an HP or Toshiba.

I just bought this, and fucking love it:

Considering making it my desktop replacement, but right now, use it as an alternate gaming machine, surfing machine, and converting machine.

I love the factory installed/provided image creation/restore software called one-key. You can have (for example) 100 gigs of bullshit, os, etc etc, and launch one-key. It'll give you the option to save an image to cds, dvds, or to an external hard drive for restoration later.

Nothing you can't do with any other type of imaging/ghosting software, but the fact that it comes with it, and it's easy as hell to use earned some brownie points to me.

I'll have to check that out, seems like a pretty good price for what you get.

the i7 720m had me sold. looking at comparisson charts with AMD's of simalar priced units, it wasn't much of a choice.

So far, i've played Starcraft 2, and Fallout New Vegas on max settings, and the girlfriend played Sims 3 maxed out, and it didn't hiccup.

I plan to eventually add a bluray drive that comes from some of the more expensive y560 models, but i'll hold out on that until i decide on what to do with my media pc.

It's thin, and has a nice feel to it to.

I carry my laptop everywhere and travel with it constantly so I needed something durable, small, and lightweight. I have gone through many different laptops before getting a 13" aluminum MacBook (I own the model before they were all pros), and I couldn't go back. BTW I'm not an apple homer by any means, hell I just finished building a new desktop with windows 7, I have just really been impressed with this MacBook and feel the cost was more than justified.

All aluminum body with glass over the screen. This thing has survived two years of abuse so far, and the only thing I've changed was the battery after 400 cycles.

Small and relatively lightweight considering it uses metal over plastic.

Great battery life, I think the new 13" models are up to 10 hours now. When running xp on it set for maximum power savings, I do get less battery life... OSX seems to be a little more efficient.

Backlit keyboard is really nice to have. It is something you wouldn't miss till you have used it.

Very large touchpad with multitouch. I have yet to find anyone that has made a better touchpad, and other makers are still playing catch up to apple with multitouch.

One of the few small form factor laptops with an optical drive. This may not matter to you, but I do use it, and we are going to be stuck with the media for awhile.

I have to use windows for some of our work apps and you can run windows natively on any of the intel macs, I personally use fusion to run XP inside of OSX.

I would wait until black Friday to buy a laptop.

I just bought a TOSHIBA satelitte and I like it, its nothing fancy though.
