  • 2017 Dove Report

    Dove hunters, report.

Where are you hunting, what are you seeing?

I'm hunting some fields in Tioga. Yesterday was a complete bust for me which was surprising for opening day. I probably saw 8 yesterday morning but were out of range and 3 yesterday evening.

This is only the second time in 13 years I missed opening day/weekend. I was supposed to be hunting in Albany this year. My buddy just sent me pic of him limiting out before 8am. Last year in Meridian was a bust, I'm jealous. I was wondering if the hurricane drove more birds up here.
You remember the stories John use to tell us about the the three chinamen playing Fantan? This guy runs up to them and says, "Hey, the world's coming to an end!" and the first one says, "Well, I best go to the mission and pray," and the second one says, "Well, hell, I'm gonna go and buy me a case of Mezcal and six whores," and the third one says "Well, I'm gonna finish the game." I shall finish the game, Doc.

I'm in Woodson. Opening morning was amazing, groups of birds in any direction you look all morning. Afternoon was slower, still flew ok but very speratic and skittish. Sat morning hunt was super slow, very few birds even moving.

Do yall eat them? Are they any good? I only ever had quail, and it seemed like it must have been a skinny ass bird when it was alive.

I was outside of Lawn (south of Abilene). There was so much water in tanks and low spots everywhere that the birds were barely flying. Not a good hunt at all. Saw a metric shit ton of hogs though. Time to get back to the lease and lay waste to them.

Near Fredericksburg and this is the worst I've ever seen. Took a shot at 1 dove that was way too far away. Only saw a few birds the entire two days.

Hondo was crazy, brownwood not so much. Need to wait for a good time front to pass through.

I think what hurt me was not doing any scouting...just didn't have time really. Drove around the field options the night before and decided on a corn field. Later that evening I went to a wheat field but turns out the fields had been washed out from the rains so there wasn't any food on the ground. I went to a milo field Saturday evening and could see that the morning hunters did pretty well. Unfortunately by Saturday evening, I think the birds had already changed their flight patterns.

Did my first Dove hunt this year, near Wichita Falls.

I had 4 come into range of me, only got 1 of them. I think our whole group only got 12 or so all weekend.

Jap cut in half, cream cheese, dove breast slice, wrap in bacon, grill. - Seems like this is a fairly common method, turned out great.

Hunted a bit opening weekend around Terrell and Forney and it was awful. This past weekend we went to Del Rio and picked up a few limits with some friends. Pretty good mix of whitewings, mournings and a few Eurasians.

Picked up a quick limit when Teal season opened up on Saturday as well

                        Rides for the weekend
