My dad got an oldie this weekend. He put a quartering shot in him but he turned a bit and it was a touch far back. After a 2.5hr tracking job in 5ft weeds we found him. I put a .45acp 185gr XTP through him at 20yds as he was still in fine form. I recovered the bullet in the off side after it broke the shoulder and was just under the hide. Got him loaded up and finally back to camp around dark.

You're crazy if you don't. You have access to Elk, Mule Deer, and Pronghorn. All of those are delicious.

Cleaning an elk solo doesn't sound fun. Does the golfball method work for the skin?

How did you prepare your Pronghorn? Every time I've had it, it was terrible.

What am I missing that's keeping the head up?

May have been kept in a walk in freezer. We've done that a few times before. Posed them in the freezer and pull them out later for pics.

I have always heard the same about pronghorn and audad as well. I'm the same way with duck so I won't hunt them.

I've had it stewed, seared backstrap steaks, and in jerky form. I like pronghorn jerky a lot. I do want to try it in a New Mexico style green chili.

EDIT: It's possible I'm irrationally exuberant about wild game.

Haven't seen anything but hogs and a few illegal bucks all season.

How many lbs of yield are you guys getting from your deer? Is there a stardard 'formula' to go by to figure the yield from hanging weight?
