If you were going to build a kit car, what would be your choice?

The Ultima GTR was the first kit car that really turned me onto the idea of a kit car. I️ lusted after it for quite a few years. Lately, I’ve been following a few builds on the sl-c on the GT40 forum. Maybe I’m lying to myself, but I️ fully intend to build a car while I’m still young enough to enjoy it. Ultima released an updated version of the GTR called the Evolution. Externally, it’s the same car. There are upgrades throughout that I️ won’t list here. It’s by no means a redesign.

The sl-c is a more current design but the Ultima is no slouch. They both appeal to me. The Ultima has a track day, almost go-kart feel to me and it’s barely over 2k pounds. Crazy fast with some balls under the right foot. The sl-c has race pedigree and, IMHO, looks more like a supercar than the Ultima.

I️ wouldn’t kick either one out of bed and if my dream comes true and I️ get to build one, I’ll have a hard time choosing.

I do think the Ultima would be an easier build for a novice based on builds I’ve seen online.

Actually, the SLC is likely going to be an easier build for a novice. Mostly C5/C6 corvette parts on the driveline end where the ultima can get out of hand with the G50 running upside down. Something else to consider is the factory 5 GTM. Mostly corvette stuff as a donor and VERY newb friendly. Have a friend who built one with mild power and went 194 in standing mile event somewhere. Factory 5 folks are good to work with too. The SLC and ultima folks are a bit less likely to be forthcoming with parts and upgrades in times of need...or 10 years down the road.

I’ve read a lot online saying the GTM is a royal PITA and the hours involved skyrocket when you get to the actual body work.

And the GTM styling does absolutely nothing for me. It’s not even in my top 10.

I don't know why you would build one when you can buy someone else's that they already blew their wad on. The resale on them tends to not be very good.

Wow! How times have changed... The hyper/ultra cars now make me cringe thinking about what it would be like to drive on the roads. Now I just want one of these with a new 5.0 and some kind of stack injection setup.

I think the biggest reason people buy them is to specifically build them...its not really a cost tradeoff. That and people probably think they will build it better than whoever they would buy it off of.

The few times I've considered it...i knew it would be cheaper to buy an actual professional built car but just wanted the challenge. Then I remembered I don't even like spending an hour installing cabinet and drawer pulls. If im going to piss away a few thousand hours it's going to be trying to invent the next slap chop or snuggy. Maybe in retirement

If I was to do over, I’d like to do a Gt40. Factory five also just came out with a 35 truck that looks pretty killer.
